Tattoo health risks: Why you should think before you ink

DALLAS-Thirteen needles are simultaneously zinging in and out of Adam Metzger’s shoulder.

The 27-year-old is unruffled. He stares unblinkingly out the storefront window of Taboo Tattoo, a studio in the Bishop Arts District. To his right, Cody Biggs shades blue into a square of the Texas state flag. His movements are sure, even.

The buzzing suddenly falls silent. Biggs pauses to dunk the handpiece into a thimble-sized plastic cup of ink, then turns back to his canvas. Metzger’s shoulder is pink and puffy, weeping streams of ink and blood.

“How are you doing, buddy?” Biggs asks, rubbing on ointment in counterclockwise circles.

“It doesn’t feel good, man,” Metzger responds. “But I’ve definitely felt worse pain.”

Plenty of people know what he’s been through. As of 2012, 1 in 5 adults had a tattoo, up from 14 percent in 2008, a Harris Interactive Poll found. And when safety standards are followed, tattoos are usually trouble-free.

But tattoos can pose health risks that many people might not consider:

Unsterilized tools or contaminated ink can lead to infection, scarring, blood-borne diseases and other, less-obvious issues.

“It’s becoming much more common, but you still have to be careful,” says Dr. Bryan Wasson, an internal medicine physician at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center at Irving, Texas. “A tattoo is like a minor surgery.

You clean and shave the skin like you’re going to operate. You use surgical tools. There are dangers. So be careful in your selection.”

During the procedure, a gun with needles punctures the top layer of the skin, depositing pigment in a deeper layer called the dermis. As the skin heals, the ink remains trapped below the surface.

“When you get a tattoo, you bleed,” said Dr. Donna Casey, an internal medical specialist at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital...

I love how the media and the pop culture push this crap day in and day out and never have to apologize and answer to the real world consequences they created.

My idea of getting tattooed has nothing to do with ink.

I’ve seen more otherwise absolutely beautiful women who have marked themselves up horrifically with this. Incredibly sad. That and punching holes in their bodies/faces.

Never considered getting one and when I see them on others it usually grosses me out. Its like s sign that says ‘I’m stupid’ or ‘I’m a tramp’. I recall that Rand Paul says we must lure them into GOP.

How did they creep into the culture for (certain groups of ) white kids?

An old girlfriend, whom I found physically irresistible - perfect - which is to say, “love at first sight” attractive, recently got in touch with me again.

After having kids she had the same pale, cute face, the same rounded lips, the same womanly hips and endless eyes, the same high breasts, the same dazzling, sexy but maternal, vulnerable but tough-as-nails smile...

And her arm was covered in tattoos.

I nearly wept at the sight of this tragedy.

Tattoos on God’s amazing gift to Men may or not be fashionable, but they are disgusting.

Just... disgusting.

I kinda look at it as a sign of idiocy. if you did it to be unique, you are unique just like everyone else.

My sister: I like music so I got a tattoo of a musical note next to my ear.
Me: I like music so I listen to it.

It ain't only kids. I see all kinds of middle aged folks with em now. There's nothing like seeing a tramp stamp peeking over some size 10 yoga pants, or some pot bellied bald guy with a full sleeve.

Trying to regard their fading youth, I guess.

Life is a risk. I’m very conservative, but couldn’t care less if someone has a tattoo. Their body, their decision. I think it’s art and can be beautiful. Or it can be ugly.

Yes and here is a memo to all the young people out there:

Tattoos do NOT age well. They fade as we get older. They stretch with our skin and sag when our skin sags and wrinkle when our skin wrinkles. Imagine the sight of one on an older woman with sagging boobs.

Trust me, tattoos do not age well at all.

If you want to have some fun for a few days, get a temporary one. Permanent tattoos are costly and painful to get rid of.

I predict that tattoo removal service will be become the next big industry. And it is not covered by Obamacare.

If a kid today wants to be different than all the other yoots around them, they will stay inkless. It’s a real smart kid that eschews ink in these times.

Just... disgusting.

Dear Mr. Golux,
You may want to stay out of our stores. Try shopping on line.
