A former U.S. officer who served in Afghanistan with Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl claims that soldiers were threatened by U.S. authorities if they questioned his story.
After he was captured, Bergdahl said on a video from his captors that he lagged behind on patrol, although other sources in the military suggested anonymously that he walked away from his post.
“Not only has this nebulous non-story been put out for years but you know these soldiers of 4th Brigade 25th Infantry Division were threatened with legal repercussions if they spoke about Bergdahl. Everybody officially mandated silencing of what we saw has been so frustrating,” Bethea explained on BBC World Service Radio today.
Bethea served in Sgt. Bergdahl's unit, and was an infantry officer in the U.S. Army from 2007 to 2014
CNN’s Jake Tapper also reported that many of Bergdahl's fellow troops signed nondisclosure agreements agreeing to never share any information about Bergdahl's disappearance and the efforts to recapture him.
Bethea explained that now he was safe, more soldiers would be trying to tell the truth of his disappearance.
BBC interviewed Bethea after he wrote an article for the Daily Beast, asserting that Bergdahl was a deserter.
“He is safe, and now it is time to speak the truth,” he wrote. “And that the truth is: Bergdahl was a deserter, and soldiers from his own unit died trying to track him down.”(continued)

If the VA scandal didn’t “blow-up” for them, why would this one?
Why would soldiers be questioning anything? Aren’t they supposed to take orders? When did the military turn into a liberal arts college?
This seems to have caught fire a lot faster than the VA story, and there’s no cabinet secretary to deflect the blame to.
Being in the military isn’t the same as slavery or being a robot, especially nowadays. In my day or my father’s time, yes, you’re right, but these are millennials.
Probably about the same time the military turned into an ongoing gay pride parade.
Sure there is, Chuck Hagel, but I don’t get why millions of veterans being abused hasn’t caused mass rioting.
They probably shouldn’t be talking about someone who is in captivity, but now that he’s out I hope that all the facts will be revealed.
It appears that people died and were wounded while looking for him. If he’s a deserter, he needs to pay. (No - - 5 years of captivity is not enough punishment.)

I am sure this has been mentioned but I toward a really curious segment on Special Report. Michael Hastings was working on the Bergdahl story at the time of his car “accident”
The articles in question included a lengthy investigative report published under Hastings’ byline in Rolling Stone on June 7, 2012 — “America’s Last Prisoner of War” — about 27-year-old U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl’s deployment to the war in Afghanistan and his capture by the Taliban in June 2009. Bergdahl is believed to still be in the custody of the Taliban.
What 0bama did here is possibly an impeachable offense. I’m not sure anything he did with respect to VA is. And I don’t think Hagel is a legitimate scapegoat here. 0bama knows the guy is a dunce. I’m pretty sure he was out of the loop on these negotiations. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if political operatives led the negotiations on this mess.
Can’t be on patrol much less lagging behind since he’d already mailed his uniform back to his father and his rifle was left behind.
Nothing is ever going to happen to “Sergeant” Bergdahl, just like nothing will ever happen to Mr. Obama.
