SAN DIEGO (AP) — A former Blue Angels commander tolerated inappropriate sexual comments and pornographic images in the workplace — including photos of naked women in the cockpits of the precision flying team's planes — during his time as its leader, the Navy said Tuesday.
Capt. Gregory McWherter was found guilty of violating two articles under the military's code of justice during nonjudicial proceedings convened Monday in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The articles were failure to obey an order or regulation and conduct unbecoming of an officer by fostering a hostile command climate and failing to stop "obvious and repeated instances of sexual harassment, condoning widespread lewd practices within the squadron and engaging in inappropriate and unprofessional discussions with his junior officers," the Navy said in a statement.
He will be given a letter of reprimand that will go in McWherter's permanent file and is widely seen as a career-ender in the service. McWherter told Navy officials he did not wish to speak to the media, said Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, a spokesman at Naval Air Forces.
The Navy said his command had explicit pornography, including photos of naked women, in aircraft cockpits; the painting of male genitalia on the roof of the center point trailer at the Blue Angels' winter training facilities in El Centro; and "sexually charged, raunchy, and homophobic humor" on maps and itineraries.

YGBSM... There are traditions in the military. Fighter guys are rebels, gentlemen bad boys, there are several ways to describe it. Guess what? SF are the same way. There are ways to build esprit and believe it or not lightly flaunting rules is one of them. These guys would also beat your ass if you were threatening a girl in public. I have seen it. Actually I have partcipated. We also drank too much, sangs lewd songs, and broke stuff. All traditions that go back to WW I in some cases.

Don’t put words in my mouth. I said it disgusted my husband. It was given out like candy purely for non-medical, recreational use. As an RN, I only thought that a healthy pilot was a fool to take a pharmaceutical drug with potentially serious side effects just for recreation when he could lose his medical because of it’s side effects. I also felt the doctor irresponsible. My husband felt the same way and was probably more disgusted, being an older pilot, that a young buck AF pilot would risk losing their medical over a drug they didn’t need.
Also, as an RN, I’m neither a prude or ignorant. My daughter got an award for honesty in 5th grade from the principal for asking to opt out of a 2 day long human reproduction program because she was sick of hearing about it since her mother worked L&D and NICU.
Yeah, the good ole days. Polio, smallpox, death from simple infection and tittie pictures at work.

Women and gays. What kind of country sends their women to war for anything other than absolutely necessary support? Only one that’s been emasculated and is at war with their own citizens. I have a lot of proud accomplishments as a women in more typically male areas- 1st motorcycle at 12 in 1971 (practically scandalous. lol), and the toys and accomplishments just got better from there. Too old to still skysurf or BASE jump. But that stuff is just “fun.” No way I think I would be fit in the military even if I can jump out of a plane, shoot a gun and fix a broken TR3 throttle with some scrounged wire, change the flat, double clutch start and drive off. I’m smart, clever and adventurous but I am not a man and I don’t belong in a war zone unless I’m there for my nursing skills. Neither does any other. And I like “girl clothes!” (said in my best Holly Hunter voice in the movie Always.”) I also don’t want some poorly educated half-wit raising my kids. One daughter started college at 13.
I turned out like this because I lived with the propaganda of equality since 1959. I also saw the reality of a mom who was a working professional. I have 2 sisters who are engineers, and 3rd one runs the advertising dept. for a major retailer. We chose staying home to raise our kids and be able to be there as wives to our husbands, and not pw ones. Our society has about zero common sense and we’ve just about completely reached “Idiocracy.”
I am guilty of twice hanging a fireman calendar in the nurses locker room. Now I know why it was taken down twice. The unit had a bunch of lesbians in it. Most of the women appreciated the hardly scandalous bare chests on buff, handsome men.

I very much appreciate your service to our country. I’ve had a serving relative in every war we’ve been in. My small contribution has been being an aerospace educator and Nurse Officer in CAP. Hopefully I inspired the kids.
