The “talks” had been going on for three years, not months. In 2011, the WH twice went to the Intelligence Committee and asked if they could do this - and both times, they were told NO, absolutely not.

So then they just went underground until Obama had been reelected and felt he was powerful enough to carry it off.

Karzai did not want this done and even the Pakistanis didn’t want it to happen, so clearly, there was no support for this except among the Taliban...and Obama.

It would have been better to give them the million bucks in 2009 as the US dollar doesn’t buy half what it used to, while terrorists hold their value so long as they are warm and breathing and can still fight.
