As John F. Kennedy once said, sometimes party loyalty asks too much. In Virginias 7th Congressional District race, Democrats are not fielding a candidate. This means the winner will be the Republican whom Democrats dislike the most House Majority Leader Eric Cantor or his challenger, the seemingly nondescript college professor David Brat.
Cantors campaign against Brat has been disappointing even by Washingtons cynical standards. For example, Cantor is using a pathetic play to claim Brat has liberal Democratic associations. The truth is the good professor is a conventional conservative eagerly seeking tea party backing.
We find Cantors campaign tactics troubling.
The best you can say about Professor Brat is that he is a novice running on a shoe-string budget and not aware of those operating in his name. Even seasoned campaigners often fail to properly vet staffers and supporters at times. So we have tried over the previous months to give Brat the benefit of the doubt given his virgin status. But as the campaign comes to a close, we are reminded of the Southern political adage: If it walks like a duck, quacks like duck and looks like a duck, then it is what is.
We have learned that the narrator of Brats television commercial is someone whose political views are extreme even by todays unhinged rhetoric. Moreover he doesnt hide it, but expresses them through a Facebook page. We recognize that social media is sometimes where people talk before they think and even try to be provocative for its own sake. This is our digital world, unfortunately.

Crossover primaries are a huge GOP-e strategy, where they can summon their friends during times of trouble.
Same reasons democrats would vote for Lindsey Graham?
“But as the campaign comes to a close, we are reminded of the Southern political adage: If it walks like a duck, quacks like duck and looks like a duck, then it is what it is.”
Funny, we say the same thing about Marxists. If it walks like a Marxist, quacks like Marxist and acts like a Marxist, then it is what it is.”
We applied this to Obama in 2008. No one wanted to listen.
We might see the same thing with Thad Cochran and others.
Open primaries are a really stupid thing.
They can’t stop a write-in campaign.
Write in Brat.
I prefer conventions. But let me add a few things...Eric Cantor has spent 2 million dollars telling residents in the 7th distirct that his more conservative opponent is actually a liberal college professor! So now Norm Leahy who is a Cantor Toady from the Bearing Drift Blog is upset because democrats may cross over and in their typical ignorance vote for Camtor’s more conservative opponent. This is too funny for words. Norm Leahy has no credibility what so ever. LOL!
bump
This election Tuesday is “it”, no write-in needed .... Cantor vs Brat. Whoever wins is the Repub on the ballot in November and there is no Dem challenger. If Cantor loses, he’s out of DC. If Brat wins, he’s in. The stakes are high so Cantor is throwing everything but the kitchen sink at this one .... and odds are he’ll likely pull it off.
You live there?
Good luck, friend.
It would be hilariously ironic if the Rats crossed over to vote for the Republican that Cantor has deemed to be a liberal. However, I don’t see that happening as there will still be someone on the local and state races for the Rats to vote in the primaries for.
With Debby Mayo-Schultz’ help, no doubt.
The ComPost getting worried that their boy, Cantor, may not be able to get over the top?
- no write ins allowed,
only the 7th district,
Virginia does not register by party so any RV can participate.
So Democrats can show up to save their pet congressman who only appears conservative. Only a 5 percent turnout is expected. Watch for the absentee ballots, rumor has it Cantor has those covered.
Open primaries need to be abolished. Would a viable alternative be the California system of having the 2 top vote primary vote getters on the ballot, even if they are in the same party?
