Pierre D. Martin

The first person arrested using Chicago police's new facial recognition technology has been sentenced to 22 years in prison, according to The Chicago Sun Times.

Pierre D. Martin, 35, was arrested for two armed robberies on Chicago's public transportation system. He was found with a new facial recognition technology the Chicago Police Department started using last year.

One of the robberies took place on Feb. 9, 2013, when Martin robbed a 20-year old man on a Pink Line train. He pulled out a gun and took the victim's cellphone. Martin stole another victim's cellphone at gunpoint at the same location just days earlier, on Jan. 28.

While Martin got away at the time, the Chicago Police Department was able to obtain images of the thief from surveillance cameras. Using the NeoFace technology, the police were able to compare the photos with the department’s 4.5 million mug shots and came up with Martin, who was then identified by witnesses.

Luckily for the Chicago Police, Martin's mug shot was in the system because he had been sentenced to three years in prison for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in 2009. Martin had also received probation in 2006 for possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

I'm waiting to hear the appeal that it was programmed by racist White people.

OR

Later disqualified for 'disparate impact' because it catches mostly Black people.

Based on that photo, it looks like it catches mostly orange people.

What’s the matter with him? Doesn’t he have black pride that Obama is president? Which in turn would inspire him to turn his life around, and have Obama and other prominent black men as role models? Isn’t he inspired by Jesse Jackson rallies, at which Jackson leads the crowd in cheers of “I—AM-—SOMEBODY!!!!”

Hopefully he will have the full 22 years to think about all of this. And not be released on parole early.

I'd say the software had it easy with that tattoo

Here's the case that I like:

Rapist Suspect Caught Using Familial DNA

"The man suspected of being the East Coast Rapist is now behind bars, caught in part by using DNA evidence."

"But the suspect, Aaron Thomas, 39, wasn’t in the DNA database. His brother’s DNA was."

4.5 million?

Is there anyone left in Chicago who's not been arrested?

Rahm Emanuel. But we can always hope, can’t we?

I don’t believe there is another person in the world with the same tattoos on his neck. That would make anyone “recognizable”.

With that said, I’m dead set against all this technology being used against the people.

One reason why some "poor people" do not have ID, is because they really do not want their pictures, with their verified real name, address, and enough info to link them with other family members, to be in government databases.

You know that this technology will eventually include the drivers license database. Particularly if there is no law against it.

I'd say the software had it easy with that tattoo

An intelligent criminal will apply makeup over his tattoos, and then be able to claim the surveillance video isn't of him, because of no tattoo.

"An intelligent criminal will apply makeup over his tattoos, and then be able to claim the surveillance video isn't of him, because of no tattoo. "

The technology is a thousand times more sophisticated than that.

First iteration of the database sort turned up this:

They then added the discriminator of the neck tattoo and got their man.

Does the 4.5 million mug shot Chicago PD have include all the grade school kids in Chicago too?

I think it’s time to start looking at those who have no mug shots on file.

Obviously there are a few left who’ve escaped arrest up until now.

True, Funny and Sad Story:

When I lived in Chicago a few years back, I freelanced for a company that did yearbook photos. I photographed kids in many of the schools on the South Side of Chicago.

On picture day, I would show up to find the waiting students composed of roughly 90%+ females. The first time this happened, I thought it was odd, so I questioned the students about it.

I was told that most of the boys wouldn’t show up on picture day so their photos wouldn’t be in the year book. This was because the local police precincts would send someone over to the school to get a copy of the new year book each year. The cops would then use the yearbook as a mugshot book to help victims identify perps.

The boys who didn’t show up for picture day didn’t want anyone to be able to identify them.

You can do the math on that one.
