He also said he wanted Chrome to win "for America."

I guess his juvenile, poor-sport and belligerent comments were understandable. After all, he really wanted his horse to win "for America" (nevermind the take-home purse and subsequent stud fees).

That is a really cynical comment.

This was a great underdog story - something traditionally loved by Americans. And, they’ll still get great stud fees and have made a ton of money despite not winning the Belmont. It would have been a great story to win all three - who can’t understand that???

Aria, I’ll explain. Mr. Coburn made these statements after his race horse lost:

“If your horse doesn’t even have the points to run in the Kentucky Derby, he shouldn’t be able to run in the Triple Crown. They’re ((bleep)) cheaters.” (I censored his statement due to offensive language)

“This is the coward’s way out,”

“Our horse had a target on his back.”

You’re welcome to read more at the link. Mr. Coburn is now apologizing. It’s not a cynical comment at all, really. I can only judge Mr. Coburns intent by his words, and using his own words. I fail to see the sincerity.

Nonsense. He was upset over the shock of losing, he spouted off, and now he’s apologizing for being an idiot.

You have no grounds to reject his sincerity. You point to nothing except that he made the mistake he’s admitting to and apologizing for. If anything, what cannot be forgiven is YOUR baseless condemnation.

Aria, not only did Mr. Coburn take the Lord’s name in vain, but he accused his opponent of cheating and being a coward. If you fail to see the dishonor and offensiveness of Mr. Coburns behavior, I have nothing further to say.

And, they’ll still get great stud fees

This market is actually shrinking. The total American Thoroughbred foal crop grows smaller every year, and stud fees, except for a handful of the best, proven stallions (most stallions are failures) have been reduced.

California Chrome's pedigree is not as obscure or weak as the blatherers on tv might have you believe, but while the sires of the dams are good, the individual female-line ancestors in the first 3 generations is not strong. California Chrome himself is a first foal, and so the quality of his sibs/half-sibs is unknowable.

It would have been a great story to win all three - who can’t understand that???

Anybody who spends any time as an owner learns quickly that most of the time YOU WILL LOSE. The people who play this game at the top know this, and most of them have the class not to throw a fit if all their dreams do not come true. What Coburn should have done is congratulate the winner, and run like blazes to the barn to see if his horse was hurt.

Coburn is also crowing that his horse is the best in the world, all while planning on keeping him in California. You prove your horse by taking him out into the world and running the best races anywhere, not sitting home and running your mouth.

High stakes easily fertilize sour grapes. I totally understand the reaction of anyone placed into that position, whether repentant or not.

“...YOUR baseless condemnation.”

Would you mind proving the “condemnation”?

Perhaps you can provide us with some anecdotes of other owners showing the same type of behavior? After all, race horses spend most of their careers losing. There must be a plethora of examples.

i’ve had a lot of hunters and jumpers - a very non-lucrative sport. I do agree that he should have kept his mouth shut but alas...he did not. But I can totally understand being passionate about your horse and your chances even when, as in our case, not being in it for any profit.

it would have been an incredible story if CC had won. I even cried when I read Seabiscuit and that was knowing how it turned out.

How is it a ‘triple’ crown if a horse runs in only one of the races?

Your comment is idiotic.

Well we know Americans aren’t running anything right now— see the influx of ‘children’ Obama is pushing into the country right now.

How can a horse run in only one race and still be a ‘triple’ crown contender? I am curious to know how that works.

You don’t understand the history and rules involving horse racing and the Triple Crown and you’re calling me an idiot? That’s comical.

Triple, three races. Tonalist only ran in one. How is he qualified for the ‘triple’ crown?

Of course you didn’t answer the question.

Who do you work for? You sound like a corporatist globalist.

A lot of name calling, I am reminded of Alinsky by your post.

The racing ‘elite’ just couldn’t stand that some lowly Americans using logic and scientific method could breed such a fine horse.

I heard the commentators mocking the owners, a la Alinsky, in the run up to the Preakness. Apparently you’re with them.
