Mark Twain once said, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” While we won’t cover statistics, we have found a damned lie. Earlier this week in an interview with Diane Sawyer, Hillary Clinton stated that by the time her and her husband exited the White House in 2001, they were “dead broke.” She added that, due to enormous legal fees following her husband’s impeachment, they had “no money.” While it is certainly true that the Clinton’s legal bills were sky high, the notion that they were penniless and broke is not only incorrect, but a damned lie.

In the year 2000, the Clinton’s made approximately $358,000 in income alone. This figure doesn’t include their valuation of assets (stocks, bonds, etc.) which were in the neighborhood of $2,000,000. These figures together give the Clinton’s an income (not including an $8,000,000 book deal Hillary signed before leaving the White House) of about fifty-seven times greater than the US median household income in the year 2000, or, as Hillary Clinton would consider it, “dead broke.”
Now about those legal fees. Yes, it is true that the Clinton’s legal bills were indeed substantial, totaling between 2-8 million dollars. No small sum. This didn’t stop them from dropping $350,000 for a deposit on a New York home so that Hillary could run for Senate. Yet, with the help of Clinton fixer Terry McAuliffe (now Governor of Virginia) they were able to secure a home loan after McAuliffe put down $1.35 million of his own money as collateral on the house.
While the Clinton’s only had a measly income of 57 times the national median at the time (barely enough to keep the lights on as far as Hillary is concerned), it didn’t take them long to build up an impressive fortune. Thanks to Bill Clinton’s speaking engagements, the Clinton’s made $9,000,000 in ten months, and another $3,000,000 from book royalties all in the span of 2001 bringing their new income to 285 times the national median. Figures more appropriate for members of the political aristocracy.
Thus, while Mrs. Clinton may have decried their financial situation following their White House exit, they were not by any stretch of the imagination “dead broke.” Usually, in order to find the stereotype of Liberal Elitism so perfectly embodied, you have to watch Bill Maher on HBO.
For the Clintons, they have been “feeling our pain” since 1992, now they are pretending and trying to convince us that they share our pain as well.

Let’s say they did have to borrow money to pay their legal bills. That opens up lots of new questions.
Where did you borrow it from? What was the interest rate? Did you go to a bank like normal people would have to or did some rich rent seeker give you a sweet heart deal? Did you have to pay it all back?
