Isn’t it nice to know that if the Koch brothers stepped up with a 50 million gift to the city of Detroit that it would summarily be refused by the same people who blame the Koch brothers for their current plight.

it’s really our duty to go after those who don’t pay, because if they don’t pay then our other customers pay for them,” said DWSD spokeswoman Curtrise Garner. “That’s not fair to our other customers.” Garner also noted that the city has programs that help those “totally in need,” but that many of the customers who can afford to pay their bills don’t bother, “and we know this because, once we shut water off, the next day they are in paying the bill in full. So we do know that that has become a habit as well,” she contended.

That sounds so familiar. She described the welfare state our country has become.

Come to Oregon. ..we get charged for the water falling on our property...oh...and our green government does NOT count water providing electricity as a “renewable resource”

I have always wanted to visit Oregon.

I have heard about your issues with the odd govt stuff.

I live in the great wide open, but even here we now have to put up with restrictions on number and type of wells we can have even though we have an abundant supply of clean fresh water. As of yet, they haven't started taxing us for rain. :)

Enough food and water to sustain life minimal housing and medical care

And who is going to pay for these things? There is no "right" to have basic necessities. We, as human beings, are all tasked with finding a way to provide these things for ourselves. It's really no different than all the other animals on the planet. Survival of the fittest.

I don’t know, but what is the point of life?

Is there God’s riches or is it a limited pie we all have to compete for

I think God has limitless riches

I have no idea, but I am just trying to make the best of it while I am here.

Yes! And we are tasked with procuring them for ourselves and our children.

Water is free if you catch it in a rain barrel or scoop it up from a stream and boil it on a campfire you made from a fallen tree. But if I have a pipe connected to my house that delivers clean water on demand, I expect to pay for it. And it is my responsibility to do what I have to do to get the money to pay for the luxury.

There is also free food in the forest, but I prefer to use money that I earned to provide for myself and my family. It is a responsibility thing.

You say you "work" with them. As a teacher I see the situation you describe (although few of them take the higher maths and science).

I disagree with turning the well-being of children over to the government and being taken away from where it belongs: individuals, churches and private charities.

Government is raw power, not comfort, not grace, not goodness, simply the power of the gun.

I don't disagree, but the welfare state is Out. Of. Control.

And I am not a Marine -- I was Coast Guard.

I recall that one summer, during the early years of the Clinton administration, there was a bad heat wave in the south, and Congress passes a bill to help poor people by air conditioners...wonder how that turned out..

Southerners had been paying taxes to help Yankees pay their heating bills for years before Clinton did this, despite the fact that more people die from heat related causes.

A right to water, food, housing, and clothing? Please explain the nature of these rights so I do not think of you as a communist.

If you want free water, drill a well, not free or tap a spring, not free either. Once drilled or tapped then it is virtually free. Except now the state wants to monitor all that free water you get from your own private property sourced by your own money and labor.

I learned in Real Estate school that the original contract for purchasing a parcel of land, included underneath that land to the center of the earth and up into the sky to the universe. All the fly over rights have been taken away, now they are working on under your feet. They want the minerals, the water. They want to put meters on your water on your land to have it monitored by the state or feds, pick your poison.

Come to Oregon. ..we get charged for the water falling on our property...

One time I asked a local "watermaster" "After God gives the rain, when exactly does the state take possession? He answered, "when it hits the ground."

With the EPA now wanting to control of all of our water, springs, ponds, creeks, puddles, they are going to have quite a time wrestling that control from our state watermaster.
