GOP picks Lankford for open Oklahoma Senate seat

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Two-term U.S. Rep. James Lankford emerged from a crowded primary field Tuesday to win the Republican nomination for Oklahoma's open U.S. Senate seat, avoiding a runoff despite a well-funded challenge from a tea party-backed candidate.

By getting more than 50 percent of the vote, the 46-year-old Lankford advances to face the Democratic nominee and one independent in November. The seat became open when GOP U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn announced in January he planned to step down with two years remaining on his term following a recurrence of prostate cancer.

Thanks for your post.

You are proving my point, national TEA Party gurus don't necessarily know what's really going on in a state.

They may meet up with a candidate, someone that another conservative talker, writer or pundit likes, sign on to that a person and attempt to move conservatives in a state toward a particular candidate, when others in the state know that candidate much better and do not agree with outsiders, even conservatives that we all like and respect.

We do not want to spit our votes between a conservative candidate that we like and someone that conservatives outside our state seem to think would be good for us.

I'm glad to hear your voice of sanity with all that is going on around the country right now.

There are many good candidates and some not so good and not so conservative but who sound good to others who don't know him/her.

Politics is a game but it "ain't bean bag" as one conservative once said.

Hey look! Establishment Republican and party insider T.W. Shannon was easily defeated by Tea Party Candidate James Lankford!

Understand these Oklahomans are the same ones that are sending Jim Inhofe back to the Senate with 88% (something like 230k votes) just in the primary. If you're going to call Lankford a lib, you've gotta do the same to Inhofe, because that's who Oklahoma is sending to the Senate.

Run Bridenstine in 2016 to at least keep Lankford voting correctly until then.

It doesn’t totally surprise me that the GOPe rigged a win in Mississippi but I admit I didn’t see this one coming. I thought that Shannon had a chance, considering his backing, or would at least make a race of it. But he got crushed.

Low information voter??? We know enough to see that Lankford vtoed for the bailout... twice, and that he supports amnesty. He won’t bring that one up until after the general election. Then he will mumble about being practical and humane, etc.

Perhaps you can enlighten us, Newheart. Please give us examples of when Lankford stood up to Boehner and the Republican establishment.

He didn’t. He’s a hack for Boehner and will now be a hack for McConnell. Oklahoma just got their own Orrin Hatch

SENATOR Lankford delivered a speech for the ages on the Planned Parenthood butchery. It made me proud to be a Republican for the first time in a long time.

Thanks for the ping, NSZ. That sure doesn’t sound like the Lankford described upthread as a McConnell butt boy. Lankford is the genuine article.
