ISIS Fighters Advance Toward Large Iraqi Dam
New York Times ^ | June 25, 2014 | By ALISSA J. RUBIN and ROD NORDLAND

Iraqi security officials said Wednesday that fighters for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria were advancing on the Haditha Dam, the second-largest in Iraq.

Worried that the insurgents would reach the dam on the Euphrates River, about 120 miles northwest of Baghdad, army officers told employees to stay inside and to be prepared to open the dam’s floodgates if ordered to do so, an employee said.

“This will lead to the flooding of the town and villages and will harm you also,” the dam employee said he told the army officer.

This would not be the first time that the Iraqi government and ISIS have engaged in dam warfare. Earlier this year, when ISIS fighters seized the Falluja Dam, they opened it to flood fields of crops all the way south to the city of Najaf. The water at one point washed east as well, almost reaching Abu Ghraib, just west of Baghdad.

ISIS are striding toward a victory which means more terror.

Wow

The Iraqi government is almost as pathetic as ours

There's roughly 5000 ISIS fighters. I wonder at what point, if any, they'll overplay their hand and piss off the Sunni tribes who at the moment hate them less than Maliki and the Shiites?

Unfortunately the US Military is currently being converted into Meals on Wheels units and can no longer perform defensive duties. The Iraqis will have to deal with this by themselves.

More terror means Uncle Scam gets to scare more money and more power out of the sheeple. Coincidence?

about 120 miles northwest of Baghdad,

I would say that is in an ISIS controlled area and not defensible by the Iraq army which is in disarray. -tom

Of course not. Obama armed ISIS for this exact purpose.

If the open the dam they can reduce the level behind it early and more gradually -mitigating the damage. Conversely, ISIS could just put mass of explosives at the base of the dam and let everything go in a 1-2 minutes.

Once they control the dam, they can bill the government for the electric power

The flooding will be just to get the governments attention

Islam have a prophesy that states (something to the effect of) the Euphrates with run dry and reveal a mountain of gold, but the believer should not touch it.

Mountain may be interpreted as a kingdom or government.

Does that mean Baghdad...or could it be Kuwait maybe?

(Note this is not what I believe, it’s what they believe. And, that they believe it makes it more likely than the next random outcome.)

Wasn’t it in the news a couple of weeks ago that Turkey had cut the flow on the Euphrates? Or, something like that?

Bingo! Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!

Just think our Border Patrol instead of securing our borders... they are helping people come in illegally and flood our country. Moreover, they are giving, the law breakers, bus tickets to go deep inside the U.S.. Which is completely illegal. No other country in the world does this.

And at the very same time while they are opening up the boarders... they are harassing law abiding U.S. citizens at the airport.

It a completely a schizophrenic approach to the war on terror.

What I also think is funny is no one is asking where did ISIS get all their funding for all those new vehicles and weapons? How are they able to finance all these expensive operations? Who is funding them?

Finally, remember the highway of death during the first Gulf war? How come we could not do that this time? Just saying....
