Where are the Occupy protesters now?
.theguardian.com ^ | June 17, 2014 | Todd Gitlin

Social media makes it easier and cheaper to build movements quickly – but bypassing the business of creating decision-making infrastructure means they can disappear just as fast.

Where have all the chanters gone; the gospel-minded Christians and the denouncers of ‘banksters’ and tyrants; the homeless and the indebted and unemployed who filled our urban squares in 2011-12, crying out such slogans as "We are the 99 percent" and "The people want the end of the regime"? Where are the leaderless revolutionaries who turned cities around the world upside down?

The simple answer is: they were dispersed. When the sometimes public parks were swept clear of troublemakers, many dispersed into a scatter of left-wing campaigns. Other activists now escort visitors around bare, fenced-off Zuccotti Park near Wall Street. In London, free bus tours with guides in top hats carry the curious around the City and Canary Wharf (“Make your very own ‘credit default swap’ and find out how to create money out of thin air!”).

One Occupy London stalwart, a sermon-on-the-mount Christian who negotiated with the Bishop of London at St Paul’s in 2011, emails me to say: “Many of us from Occupy London have ended up going all over the world. Our decisions to travel to the far-reaches were probably inspired by Occupy in many cases, although not all of us are working as activists in other countries. We remain in touch with each other, and support the hardcore group that are fighting fracking in the UK now … B returned to the USA, C is in Pakistan, D in Spain, E in Tunisia, F in Greece, others are in India, Africa, Thailand … I am currently living in Kuwait, teaching the young to be critical thinkers.”(continued)

The ones that weren’t given political appointments by liberals went back to holding cardboard signs on street corners.

“You know what’s really hilarious? On the music production boards I read, filled with libs and a few occuidiots (admitted ones, I occasionally see discussing buying new/selling/collecting old synths and gear. Some of it could literally feed a homeless guy or three for a couple years.

But they are no capitalists!”

I don't know about London Occupy bozos. Over here a very large % appear to the be same violent protesters in other liberal protests. Many appear to be the unemployed college grads with instant Unemployment Degrees. They got their worthless degrees and protested the lack of jobs for those without skills or an education that prepared them for jobs.

Another large % out here on the lost coast, appeared to be the usual anarchists. who live in their moms’s basements or attic. They come out to destroy people's property and freedom and feel good about it. They never want to work. They just want our money to do drugs and commit violence.

Because their art is righteous, and because they want to make a difference, and because they want to change the world. For everyone else.

With vintage gear.

“It’s a whole different reality between their ears.”
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I agree but I would add that there is ALMOST NO reality between their ears. They only agree with the sort of reality that cannot actually be challenged such as if you stick your head underwater you will very soon remove it or you will drown. Any kind of reality that is not of that stark a nature is open to their absurd interpretation. They can spout absolute nonsense of the kind that any sane person would laugh at and then with a straight face tell you that you are too stupid to recognize their brilliance.

One thing that I admit to never being able to quite grasp is how the ranks of liberals are split between the most highly “educated” and successful and those at the bottom of the scale. Most of those in the middle who struggle for a living but want to be able to hold their head up and say they are at least making it on their own at some level don’t swallow the liberal garbage but there are some who are actually in the high triple digit range and hold degrees who watch MSNBC and profess to be getting the truth that Fox News is withholding from them. Some of those people don’t have a clue how to make it in the world on their own even WITH their relatively high IQ and their degrees. There is nothing more pathetic than someone going on forty with a really high IQ score, a computer science degree and the income of a church mouse, depending on others to feed him and spouting off as if HE is the smartest man in any room he enters. This world is full of fools with degrees who have had every opportunity but cannot come close to matching the accomplishments of my late father who was an eighth grade dropout and an alcoholic. He believed in big government himself but he always had sense enough to know that the government does not help those who are as he was, hard working taxpayers. Yes, contrary to what some think not all alcoholics are bums, in my youth there were many who worked very, very hard but could not take a drink without taking another and another and another. Some would even refer to themselves as “weekend alcoholics”.

You need to destress a little, I don’t know how long you can survive doing that over and over.

It was amazing that some very conservative people seemed to think the occupy bunch were something like the Tea Party. The two resemble each other about as much as the ants at a picnic resemble the people who baked the cake the ants are eating.

The murders and rapes have discouraged them.

The big one is www.gearslutz.com. Look in the “Moan Zone’/general chat section around the time of any major event like Earth Day or some big ruling on eco issues for best results.

But any music board will get you similar results really.

Well they DESERVE a couple Pultecs and a Fairchild! Only they can truly appreciate such things afterall.

The Guitar libs are even worse than the techie libs. $50,000 Strats.

For people so unconcerned with material things, they sure do like the finest and most expensive of material things.

The whole movement was based (as with all things leftist) on emotion rather than intellect, so it crumbled rather easily.

It was also based on the weird but prevalent assumption that possession of a laptop + Facebook page = power. It was a "revolution" based on fluff. There was nothing substantive, as far as practical action was concerned. Just "getting together" was enough.

OWS was essentially a glorified flash mob.

You mean they aren’t on the sidewalk outside Chelsea Clinton-Mezvinsky’s $10 mil condo ragging on her?

I agree, wideawake.

kearnyirish2 - I'm not nearly as polite and restrained as wideawake, I say YOU LIE!

Perhaps in “your culture” (whatever that may be) that is an expected and accepted activity, but it is neither expected nor widely accepted in the USA, among the vast majority of USA citizens and legal immigrants.

The OWS astroturf commie ruse was an attempt to deflect attention away from, and stifle the rise of the TEA party.

Hint: There is no political party that can claim to be a leader of/for the TEA party.
We are just a large number of individual citizens intent on smacking down the RICO level criminal activities of an out of control taxpayer funded bureaucratic government, at every level, who ignore the will, laws and constitution of the USA.

I think its worse than that. They simply (and I think quite honestly) cannot see the hypocricy. They genuinely cannot see what is so obvious to anyone else.

I have no idea as to what activity you are referring; please be specific.

Occupy Wall Street pre-dated the TEA Party; after the election of Obama (at which point the TEA Party was born), Occupy Wall Street had outlived its usefulness to the Dems and was ignored by the media (since they had begun to criticize Obama - apparently they thought he was going to bring back the Wall Street jobs from Asia). The freak show you saw right before the 2008 election was not the same people protesting their layoffs in 2007.

The TEA Party is a small number of individual citizens who have had little bearing on the political landscape of this country since their inception.
