Industry Group: IRS Lost Email Story ‘Makes No Sense,’ Records Should Have Been Kept

An industry group is claiming the IRS should have kept full records of its apparent destruction of ex-official Lois Lerner's hard drive, saying "the notion that these emails just magically vanished makes no sense whatsoever."

The latest to weigh in on the lost emails controversy is the head of the International Association of Information Technology Asset Managers. Group president Barbara Rembiesa released a statement on Thursday questioning recent testimony by IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, who told Congress last Friday that Lerner's hard drive was "recycled and destroyed" after it crashed in 2011.

She claimed that a certified "IT asset destruction" team should have been brought in to document and complete that process.

"If this was done, there would be records. If this was not done, this is the smoking gun that proves the drive or drives were destroyed improperly -- or not at all," she said.

Rembiesa adds her voice to a growing list of industry experts dubious about agency claims that Lerner's emails disappeared after a hard-drive crash in 2011.

Lerner is the former head of the Exempt Organizations division, and is at the heart of the controversy over agency targeting of Tea Party groups. After the IRS revealed earlier this month that many of her emails from 2009 to 2011 were gone, outraged Republicans arranged a rapid-fire string of hearings on the matter -- and on the sidelines, some computer experts backed up their suspicions.

The IRS, though, insists this was simply a case of a routine computer failure -- one of thousands across the federal government. Koskinen testified on the matter twice since last week, stressing that despite the computer problems, the agency was able to recover 67,000 Lerner emails, including 24,000 from other accounts, from January 2009 to May 2013.

No way to do it. America is now under communists democrat control and are assisted by the MSM. Even if we get the Senate and keep the House still nothing can be done.

Miss Romney yet. None of this would be happening this second term. Remember some of us made a desperate appeal to go with the lesser of the two evil if you consider both evil. How do you like what you got now?

Congress just needs to hire a hacker to go and pull them off of the servers the e-mails no doubt still reside on. The IRS should have no say about redacting them since they have adamantly maintained that they are lost and gone and can’t be recovered.

Obama does not care. Drive that home. He does not care! In the next two years he will run rampant over the nation and its Constitution. It matters not what the congress says. He will just go on and on and challenge them to stop him. If they take the law suit route it will take until the next decade to work through the courts. If they attempt impeachment he will duck it in the Senate. The press and the congress let this happen. They must be the first to pay and pay large. The HoR must shut off all funds for Obama’s programs. All of them. IOW defund every stinking department. Even if it shuts down the government completely. If we are to live like a third world country lets be a third world country where nothing works. No trains, no planes, no utilities no welfare, no nothing. I guarantee you that condition won’t last too long before the tar, feathers and pitchforks appear. JMHO!

Republicans may stumbled onto an issue they might not take a beating on.

Almost everyone who isn’t a Moocher hates and distrusts the IRS.

And as for the back-up tape:

[Congressman] Chaffetz wanted to know ‘why didn’t they just go to that six-month tape?’ Koskinen replied that it is a disaster recovery tape that has all of the emails on it, and 'is a very complicated tape to actually extract emails [from], but I have not seen any emails to explain why they didn’t do it. So I – It would be difficult, but I don’t know why they didn’t do it.’

‘But you said that the IRS was going to extraordinary lengths to give it to the recovery team, correct?’ Chaffetz quizzed. ‘That’s correct,’ said Koskinen. ‘But it’s backed up on tape?’ ‘For six months, yes.’

‘So,’ Chaffetz asked, ‘why didn’t you get them off the backup?’ ‘All I know about that is that the backup tapes are disaster recovery tapes that put everything in one lump,’ Koskinen replied, ‘and extracting individual emails out of that is very costly and difficult, and it was not the policy at the time.’

‘Did anybody try?’ Chaffetz asked the IRS commissioner. ‘I have no idea or indication that they did,’ came his answer.

Imagine that, actually using a back-up tape to recover lost data. /sarc

The IRS, though, insists this was simply a case of a routine computer failure — one of thousands across the federal government.

If so, two questions: (1) How come we taxpayers have to expend so much money, just to get such a poor report from what we are to expect is state-of-the-art equipment (already paid for by the U.S. taxpayer)? And (2), Are we taxpayers to believe the missing e-mails are irretrievably lost???

Such a thing does not normally happen in the real world: E-mails never "die"; they just "melt" into the "cloud." But the "cloud" can be probed, and its contents recovered....

So my proposal is that we retain the services of Edward Snowden to solve this problem. LOL!

If anyone can do it, I imagine he can: Evidently, he knows how to "compile" metadata....

Meanwhile, it's probably a sound idea "to put these criminals in jail." Or at least issue restraining subpoenas in light of their grotesque malfeasance against the public good....

FWIW.

Thanks for the great post, blam!

The Justice Department is in a Coma..

The Feds can do what ever they want to do..

Obama is the Main Half-Honkey MAn of the CIA, FBI, NSA, BATF, All the military, IRS, and several other Goon Squads..

Any that think he is NOT...... are delusional..
Like the Republican Congress, the Supremes, and other Optimists..

Can’t blame them really.. fear of a visit by the Goon Squads must be a very real threat to those guys..
“Vince Foster” sent a loud message to those in Wash. D.C. and slowly the message reach the States.. and probably down to local sites..

Looking more every day like 1938... Germany..
I might be wrong it could be like 1917 Russia..

The Fabian Socialist “heaven” might not be far away..

The IRS isn’t really giving an explanation for the emails.

If you really look at it as it really is, what the IRS is actually doing is saying, “hey Congress, hey American people, hey everyone on planet Earth: F*CK YOU. Whaddya gonna do abboudit?”
