In between muscular men in Speedos gyrating to thumping dance music and drag queens decked out in formal gowns, Salt Lake City's gay pride parade also featured a few, more conventional participants: Some of America's most well-known companies.
From Starbucks to eBay to Macy's, the increasing visibility of corporations at the parade in Utah and at others across the country in recent years comes as same-sex marriage bans fall in the courts and polls show greater public acceptance of gay marriage.
In that climate, companies are finding that the benefits of sponsorship outweigh the risks of staying away, giving them a chance to make a statement in support of diversity and use it to help recruit and retain top talent who want to work for a business that supports LGBT rights.
"We understand there are people who might have different points of view on that," said spokesman Michael Palese at Chrysler, which has been a sponsor of the Motor City Pride Festival and Parade in Detroit for years and became a primary backer this spring.
"We respect their point of view as long as they respect ours," Palese said.
This weekend, some of the largest gay pride events are scheduled, including in the Twin Cities, New York, San Francisco and Chicago. They come just days after a federal appeals court, in a Utah case, ruled for the first time that gay couples have a constitutional right to marry.
At many companies, support for pride parades and festivals is being fueled by internal Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender councils who are given small budgets and freedom to spend that money where they choose.

Bingo. Marriage is the union of a man and a woman.
“gay” marriage is like dry water. It doesn’t exist.
What if I want to proclaim that I am a Doberman pinscher. Does that make it so?
Or better yet, as a male, I demand the right to have a baby.
That’ll show them.
Props to Monty Python on that one.
eBay? Oh, no! Now I have to give them up, too, huh?
How many fags and freaks are there in the country? How are they so well organized? How do they have such influence?
One company I know surely supports the LGBT freaks and that is.... Chevron. Their office lobby has posters that proudly proclaim their support for the local LGBT clubs and how proud they are to be listed in the top 10 of corporations for LGBT freaks.
Self-insured for medical care, I wonder how much their liability is for Aids?
Calling “Evil Good and Good Evil” is the point at which a nation is turned into hell... Christians, stand for God!! don’t be afraid to call Evil, Evil and speak the name of Jesus Christ publicly today.
Yes, it makes it so. And everybody must refer to you as such. It is all up to you. You get to determine the reality others must abide.
Alas, Brave New Babylon
Amen!
“Calling Evil Good and Good Evil is the point at which a nation is turned into hell... Christians, stand for God!! dont be afraid to call Evil, Evil and speak the name of Jesus Christ publicly today.”
When you do, best have your ducks in a row, because the MSM will tear your life apart looking for fly poop in your pepper to show the world your hypocrisy. Live blamelessly so as to give the enemy nothing to criticize.
Yes, but we do fail, constantly... but what distinguishes us from the word is that we acknowledge God, even in our fallenness. King David, though he was an imperfect vessel, was a man after God’s heart and God honored him. Ya, they can and will through stones, but we need to stand and take the hits and continue to stand. “We have this treasure in earthen vessels” and that treasure is what the world hates, the treasure speaks for itself... Jesus be Praised!!
