The U.S. Army is moving forward to replace the Cold War-era M9 9mm pistol with a more powerful handgun that also meets the needs of the other services.
As the lead agent for small arms, the Army will hold an industry day July 29 to talk to gun makers about the joint, Modular Handgun System or MHS.
The MHS would replace the Army's inventory of more than 200,000 outdated M9 pistols and several thousand M11 9mm pistols with one that has greater accuracy, lethality, reliability and durability, according to Daryl Easlick, a project officer with the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Georgia.
"It's a total system replacement -- new gun, new ammo, new holster, everything," Easlick said.

I have one of those Blackhawk kydex retention holsters. It draws fast and easy and the retention is solid as a rock. I’m sold.
Most cops can’t shoot. I used to shoot at the SW range in Springfield and cops would come in. Hardly any of them could hit a target right in front of them.
It was kind of scary.
Yes, I know there ARE cops that can shoot. And like most people they keep their mouths shut and let their work speak for itself.
Does it require you depress the trigger housing button to remove it?
Last I heard, DOD said that insurgents aren’t “lawful combatants” so its OK to shoot them with expanding bullets. The Army had a special EFMJ round built with a polymer that shows up on Xrays and they’ve been using them.
Yeah, it’s definitely a preference thing... I just got “used to” mine over the years, and stuck with them.
I knew several officers who didn’t like the pistol for that reason only.
They never used it in firefight did they?
I like wheelguns too. I use an Uncle Mike’s pocket holster for a SW642 that I drop in my pocket in the summer. I usually keep that with me in the glove compartment, everywhere I go. But it’s a handy little snubbie and easy to carry.
I’ve got US Military Colt 1911A1s, a Colt 1911, Springfields, Rock Island, Auto Ordnance, and a couple Colt commercial compacts and a Remington.
By far, by far, the best most accurate ones I have are my two Ruger SR1911s. I have still yet to put my SR1911 Commander version though a high round count test.

It’s got a button right where your trigger finger naturally rests. Push that and it comes right out. they have models with more switches etc to stop gun grabs, but this one holds when I want it to hold and comes out when I want it to come out

Interesting. I would have expected SIG to use a different number designation for the different sized frame. SIG-Sauer nomenclature makes no sense to me. Is it purely arbitrary?
I bought my wife a S&W Lady Smith in 357. If it didn’t have “Lady” inscribe on it I’d buy one....great little compact steel revolver - 5 shot.
Yeah....I’ve read about those. One case in particular is the guy pressed the button and his finger stayed depressed as it was drawn out and landed on the trigger.... a leg shot.

Smith makes rock-solid wheelguns... it’s their bread and butter.
I agree. If the military adopted 10mm, then there would be more makers and more ammo, and (maybe) prices would go down.

I used to think the same as you, but Glock has an extremely good reputation for taking incredible abuse and still work. Do an internet search for "torturetestGlock" and you'll see a torture test that should have killed any weapon, e.g. 8,000 rounds without cleaning, dropping it out of an airplane, etc... . The two hardest things I have to wrap my brain around is: 1) no owner operated safety switch and 2) it is really ugly.
I've used a pile of pistols over the years and I have to say that if I only had one pistol to carry, it would be a Glock. Also, with certain models, you can change out the caliber easily.

Looks as though you are right. Just checked and both the 229 and the 239 can be had in all three calibers. The 239 is just a smaller frame with reduced ammo capacity. Then again, it’s the same with the Glocks, although they have different model numbers depending on the ammo, the base frames are the same size.
