Seattle pushing back on the $15 minimum wage

When Seattle passed their new city council ordinance mandating a staged increase in the minimum wage to $15.00 per hour, many local businesses – as well as observers across the nation – were left shaking their heads. The rules seemed to be unevenly applied, with some businesses having to comply but not others, as well has having a complete disregard for whether or not the job providing entities would be able to remain competitive and survive under the new rules. As Reuters reports, a coalition of business owners are now moving to exercise the power of public support to put the brakes on this thing before it goes off the tracks entirely.

Forward Seattle, which represents restaurants, retailers and other businesses, handed in just under 20,000 signatures to the Seattle City Clerk on Wednesday, more than the 16,510 needed to qualify for the November ballot, said group co-chair Angela Cough.

The proposal would ask Seattle voters to repeal a $15 minimum wage increase that was approved by a unanimous vote of the City Council last month and signed by Mayor Ed Murray. It is scheduled to go into effect over several years.

The move by city leaders marked the first time a major U.S. city has committed to such a high base level of pay. Seattle is among several cities leading the way in a national push by Democrats to raise minimum wages, and the plan in the Pacific Northwest city has drawn criticism from business groups.

Over at The American Thinker, Rick Moran asks a few pointed questions which the city council might want to consider.

Many voters believe all businesses are rich and don’t pay their employees $15 an hour because they’re greedy.

In Washington, DC, with Walmart trying to open 6 stores for DC’s 640,000 residents, there was an attempt to require large retailers (70,000 sq. ft. or larger) to pay $12.50 and hour. It lost, but by only 1 vote. In many areas, Walmart employees are getting significant Federal dollars in food stamps, and other payments because their wages are so low. Walmart’s CEO is paid $21 million.

" a good example of why I left that leftist hell hole."

Seattle is such a disgusting place to visit. Homeless bums everywhere begging, sleeping on the streets, basically taking over public spaces in the south near Pioneer Square and the art district.

I avoid going there unless there is some very special event. Sick place. Thanks, Liberals for making a formerly beautiful city into the nation's bum magnet.

This really is a typical scene on the Streets of Seattle.

Minimum wage is an absolute joke being that they will hire illegals for a fraction of that. I remember in the 70s when I was in High school it was tough to get a job, I can’t even imagine what it’s like now. “Can you work for $3 bucks an hour? Well then get lost. I’ll hire Juan”

Bothering to enforce a law like "E-Verify" would solve a lot of problems, and free up a lot of low-paying, low skilled jobs for American citizens, like teens getting their first job, or for seniors, looking to pick up a few extra bucks.

But then, "illegal" is nothing but a sick bird, unless you cross the government.

“What do not people get???”
History lessons in school on the shortcomings of marxism.
Also education sadly lacking in basic economics.

“Many voters” are economically ignorant.

BS. The average wage for Walmart store employees in more than $15 and they get sick leave, education assistance, health insurance, etc. Stop believing all of the UNION propoganda. The CEO of the world’s largest retailer is making FAR less than many of the people on Wall Street!

It is good stuff, better than McDonald's and cheaper too.

There's a place for a chain like that with or without minimum wage. I'm surprised no one has tried it yet, at least with order-takers. I can't say that I've had any memorable interactions with them, and they often make errors.

I don’t see the saliva injectors in that graphic. Is that an extra cost option?

Of course, the underlying reason for the leftist push to increase minimum wage is the lib/leftist idea that businesses exist to provide jobs instead of to make money for the business owner. Every time a new business starts up in my part of the country, the local media asks the owner how many jobs they plan to provide. Just once I wish an owner would answer "as few as possible."

That is the politically incorrect answer and sounds coldhearted. But let's be realistic...no business owner is going to add more costs to doing business than they can financially justify. Leftists simply don't understand economics.

Not saying it will happen, but what happens to this Minimum Wage if we get hit by a dose of hyper-inflation?

The real minimum wage is zero dollars.

Was a time not so long ago minimum wage was a negative number, when one or one's family paid skilled craftsmen to take on apprentices.

Seattle Common Core Math

zero skill sets + zero life experience + zero people skills + negative attitude = $15/hr

what right does the city council of Seattle have to legislate wages?

The businesses have an equal right to bill the city for the excess paid over the existing wage.

When I was a kid I had a job on a construction painting crew, an American can’t get that job anymore in my city, because subcontractors that hire illegals underbid everybody else.

The same will happen with every job in Seattle, those businesses that survive will be staffed entirely by illegals.

RE: Walmart employees are getting significant Federal dollars in food stamps, and other payments because their wages are so low. Walmart’s CEO is paid $21 million.

Why isn’t it possible to DECREASE the equivalent amount in food stamps for the equivalent amount of dollar one earns at Wal-Mart? That would encourage more people to work and decrease the amount of money government has to spend as well.
