The Quran has 6666 verses in it (surahs). The curriculum in a madras is engineered around the complete memorization of all of them.
The Bible used to be used in English lit classes in the US for a long time. Two birds, one stone, as it were.
I believe that madras’ use the Quran as a primer for learning Arabic or Farsi.
Actually surahs are chapters, not verses. There are 114 surahs in the Qur’an. There are a total of 6236 verses in the Qur’an, but that number can vary depending on whether or not the bismillahs are counted. I think there are only 114 bismillahs - one per surah.
I believe that madras use the Quran as a primer for learning Arabic or Farsi.
______________
Don’t know about Farsi, but it is used as an Arabic primer; the only downside is that Koranic Arabic is basically high Arabic, somewhat analogous to Shakespearean English, and no one speaks that anymore, so using the Koran to learn modern Arabic would be like using the KJV Bible to learn modern English.
Madrassas only teach Arabic. The Koran is only legitimate in Arabic. Moslems claim that there is no translation that is legitimate thus no one who does not read Arabic is lying when he quotes the Koran and anyone who does read Arabic who quotes the Koran unfavorably is also lying. The True Koran is only in Arabic and can only be truthfully read by faithful believers in the whole Moslem schtick.
