Costco Removing D'Souza's 'America' From Shelves

The retail giant Costco Wholesale has issued an order to remove all copies of Dinesh D’Souza’s bestselling book, “America: Imagine the World Without Her,” from the shelves of its stores nationwide, WND has confirmed.

The book, in this midterm election year, is a strong rebuttal of the progressive ideology behind President Obama’s policies, which have been supported by Costco co-founder and director Jim Sinegal, a major Democrat donor and a speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention that nominated the president. A Washington Post political reporter has noted Obama’s “romance” with the nation’s second-largest retailer.

At Amazon.com, D’Souza’s book, released June 2, is ranked No. 43 overall and is the No. 3 hardcover book in Amazon’s Politics and Government section and No. 1 in the Commentary and Opinion subsection of Politics and Government.

Costco has sold more than 3,600 copies of “America” nationwide, with about 700 copies sold last week as D’Souza’s film by the same name opened at more than 1,000 movie theaters nationwide.

But Costco’s book department issued the “pull-order,” requiring all Costco stores nationwide to remove the book, confirmed Scott Losse, an inventory control specialist in the book department at the Costco Wholesale corporate office in Issaquah, Washington, a suburb of Seattle.

The July 1 order required all copies to be removed by July 15.

Contacted for a reaction, D’Souza was surprised to learn of the Costco decision.

“If true, this would be very odd,” D’Souza said.

“We’re in the process of finding out what’s happening. I look forward to getting to the bottom of this and continuing the strong relationship my publisher and I have always had with Costco and their millions of shoppers.”

Most Costco stores WND contacted Monday had already pulled “America” from the shelves, with others scheduled to remove it with their regularly scheduled inventory

I just got a good deal on a new set of Michelins at COSTCO last Saturday morning and they were on the car in 45 minutes. I buy my books at book stores.

I don’t applaud everyone who stands by values I disagree with. I don’t applaud abortionists for killing babies, muslims for killing Christians and Jews, or obamunists for banning pro-America books.

I would support a Supreme Court decision securing the right of costco to not sell the book, but I’m not going to cheer costco for pulling it off the shelves.

Why do you cheer this decision?

You don't have to call Costco to find out why it was pulled. It only sold 700 copies in 464+ locations. That's about 1.5 books per location in a week. It really is that simple.

Costco sold boatloads of Sarah Palin’s books. Same with Rush Limbaugh's books and other authors. It's all about sales volume.

Sure we can condemn them, we just hadn’t ought to try to violate their right to do so. That’s the difference between us and the left. They can pull the book, we can shun and condemn them.

“It’s all about sales volume.”

So why wouldn’t they discount them rather than pull them and just not order any more.

I don’t think boycotts work very well if one only uses the target of the boycott when it would inconvenience one otherwise. OTOH, I don’t put much stock in boycotts these days, everything is too global or otherwise interconnected. If it’s a small or local business, it might work.

As soon as I heard about it I went to the Costco website, then the link to membership change, put in my number and requested that my membership be canceled, then requested that I receive no further communication via mail or e-mail and finally clearly stated the reason why.

I like BJ’s better.

I gave up my Costco membership during the Kerry/Bush race in 2004 for political reasons and joined BJ's. While BJ's is a little closer to home I rejoined Costco this year instead. With what I save on Kirkland Dog Food alone (5 star rating on dogfoodadvisor.com) it has already saved me more than the cost of my membership and eliminates the biweekly trips to the pet food store.

While it bothers me to say this, I really prefer Costco. To balance it out, I keep my membership at Sam's (but the closest one is 40 miles from home.)

Time for the bastards at Costco to be visited by a barrage of calls, e-mails and letters.

I plan to drop my membership and switch to Sam’s CLub.

Applause for you. If we’re going to do a thing, we need to do it right, wholeheartedly, or not bother.

Discounting them is a publisher decision. Costco will just return the unsold copies to the publisher. Costco also has a generous return policy and they don’t discount books below the initial sales price. They let others discount them if they can’t be sold a the initial Costco price.

That’s pretty stupid. The book sold 700 copies in a week; less than 1.5 books per location and stores were told to remove them by mid July. It has nothing to do with being conservative or liberal. With those numbers, I would have pulled it, too.

It’s fun to be part of the collective. Join the crowd. Walking uphill is hard, just mandate that someone else should be ordered to carry you up and you can slide down on your ...
and repeat.

I’m sure something will become sensitive and feeling after a few trips.

Repeat until no one wants to carry you any longer or you butt gets sore whichever comes first.

That’s your opinion. . .there are other items in the store besides books that I purchased on-line. In fact I never bought any of their books. I’ll leave that to you.

By the way, they probably won’t carry the DVD either when it comes out.
