Costco removing D'Souza's 'America' from shelves

President Obama visiting a Maryland Costco store in January.

NEW YORK – The retail giant Costco Wholesale has issued an order to remove all copies of Dinesh D’Souza’s bestselling book, “America: Imagine the World Without Her,” from the shelves of its stores nationwide, WND has confirmed.

The book, in this midterm election year, is a strong rebuttal of the progressive ideology behind President Obama’s policies, which have been supported by Costco co-founder and director Jim Sinegal, a major Democrat donor and a speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention that nominated the president.

Costco has sold more than 3,600 copies of “America” nationwide, with about 700 copies sold last week as D’Souza’s film by the same name opened at more than 1,000 movie theaters nationwide.

But Costco’s book department issued the “pull-order,” requiring all Costco stores nationwide to remove the book, confirmed Scott Losse, an inventory control specialist in the book department

The Washington Examiner reported June 20 that the book sold 4,915 in the first week and 5,592 in the second week but mysteriously was kept off the New York Times bestseller list, where it would have ranked No. 8 and then No. 11 on the June 29 list.

The book will be on the Times July 13 list, however, at No. 17.

In total, Costco has given $100,000 to Obama and another $100,000 to Priorities USA, the pro-Obama super PAC.

Concerned individuals may contact Costco President and CEO W. Craig Jelinek by email or by calling (425) 313-8100 and/or Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President Richard A. Galanti by email or by calling (425) 313-8100.

I think Carson is another “Manchurian Candidate” for us. One may also see he is a staunch gun control advocate.

I'd continue to buy the cheap gasoline and cheap boxes of grapefruit but short the stock (when the time is right -- and I think the fat lady is warming up right now).

I've never purchased a book at Costco. Easier to click on a box on Amazon. (But I have no plans to buy D'Souza's book from either source.)

Boycotts never, ever work. However, a business plan of selling cheap commodity products in bulk at a time of commodity shortages and rising commodity prices might not work too well.

If this guy wants his business to serve as a Tool for The Fool in the White House, he has that right. I can spend money elsewhere and will continue to do so.

Negative comments are all ready appearing on Costco's Facebook page. I suggest everyone participate in this. We should also download the Costco App, rate it low and leave negative feedback. This was done with A&E during the Duck Dynasty outrage and seemed to have an impact.

I don't for a minute doubt the politics of the ownership. However, there are some things that I can tell you, as an insider who has published books sold at Costco and Wal-Mart and Target.

*3500 copies sold on a roll out isn't bad---but it's not spectacular. Normally Barnes & Noble sets the stage with a pre-order. A pre-order of 20,000 copies is excellent, but I don't know how many B&N pre-ordered of this. However, once B&N does its pre-order, Costco and WM come in with their orders based on that.

*700 copies in a week when you have a movie premiering, however, is not sufficient to keep a book in WM or Costco. Don't get me wrong, it's a good number. But after 10 years, my "Patriot's History" still sells about 250 copies a week with zero publicity and zero marketing. We'll sell 700 in Christmas weeks, easy.

For comparison, "Patriot's History" after the Glenn Beck exposure was SHIPPING 19,000 copies . . . a day.

So, what I'm guessing is that the book did a good initial sale, then has tapered off significantly. Costco and WM only carry the very hottest books.

Again, not questioning whether Costco is a bunch of libs, but only providing a little inside baseball.

Already this month pulled my membership due to its policy of stripping those with concealed carry at the door to leave them defenseless.

Will be a Sam’s boy hereinout.

I endure an occasional trip to Costco as a preview of the United States when unrestrained immigration becomes the norm.

No word of a lie: when I hear English spoken aloud in Costco I’m surprised.

I know Aldi pays well starting out (for retail) but there is an obvious reason: less people working harder.

Aldi is awesome. The checkers are so fast, you have to race to get your money out of your wallet before they are finished your order.

Done and done. We are currently “members” and are up for renewal. I mentioned that in the email and stated that if this is indeed occuring, we won’t be renewing and will urge others to either never join, cancel or not renew. We’ll see what, if any, response we get.

They are opening their first Oklahoma store near me soon.

It reminds me of a Seinfeld skit.

I concur. I mentioned it because it explains his communist-like mindset. Book banning indeed.

That's certainly a piece of the puzzle. Just found this as well.

Costco "has half the number of employees per square foot (of Walmart), is a much smaller company, its stores are only in affluent areas and people are buying in bulk," says Richard Berman, who runs a business advocacy group opposed to a minimum wage increase. "It's like saying, 'Why does Microsoft pay more than Starbucks?'

http://www.ksdk.com/story/news/nation/2014/01/30/why-is-costco-able-to-pay-so-much-more-than-minimum-wage/5050001/

Seems to be typical garbage again, higher wages = less people working.

Just submitted...Sam's Club here I come!

I have been a loyal Costco member and shopper for years. I just found out that one of the co-founders is a big Obama supporter, and the company has ordered Dinesh D'Souza's "America" pulled from shelves, a slap in the face to conservatives everywhere. I bet Hillary Clinton's book is displayed prominently.

As free Americans, your founders and/or Board of Directors can support the causes they choose and spend their money as they see fit. I find it ironic that they hate the very country that provides such freedoms. They should realize, however, that censoring conservative views has consequences for business. I too am a free American with many options. I will not spend money at any establishment supporting the current White House occupant, who seems determined to destroy the country with his Marxist beliefs and policies.

Although my membership runs through next May, it is unlikely that I'll be shopping at Costco again. Your top competitor, a fine American company, is right down the street.

You can save the canned reply because I'm not interested.

(My name and member number)
