I’m sure this naive experiment by Costco’s CEO came at cost without garnering any new business.

My read is that they have a rigid process algorithm there with only a minimal number of buyers making guesstimates in the loop. If the up and coming book doesn’t hit the best seller list soon enough, then it gets remaindered. And it can make stupid decisions like this, I mean stupid even from a gross sales viewpoint.

They’re a super bulk bargain house. If you want a gross of toilet paper rolls that’s the place to go. Individual items like books, probably less so; they probably could get out of the book business altogether and not suffer all that much.
