It is true.

They unreasonably did not bow down to King George III, and obnoxiously threw snowballs loaded with gravel and stones at his soldiers.

They unreasonably started a war with the most powerful military force on the planet at the time.

They taunted and otherwise treated his soldiers with violence, when the soldiers were just trying to restore order.

King George's order.

Pound sand if you don't like it.

John Adams knew that he was obnoxious and disliked.

In Adams' own words...


Adams was appointed to the Committee of Five with Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston and Roger Sherman to draft the Declaration, which was to be ready when Congress voted on independence... The committee in general, and Jefferson in particular, thought Adams should write the document, but Adams persuaded the committee to choose Jefferson and promised to consult with Jefferson personally.[40]

40. From Adams' notes: "Why will you not? You ought to do it." "I will not." "Why?" "Reasons enough." "What can be your reasons?" "Reason first, you are a Virginian, and a Virginian ought to appear at the head of this business. Reason second, I am obnoxious, suspected, and unpopular. You are very much otherwise. Reason third, you can write ten times better than I can." "Well," said Jefferson, "if you are decided, I will do as well as I can." "Very well. When you have drawn it up, we will have a meeting.""
