The Party of Government (both Rat Wing and Pub Wing) is the problem.

The imminent death of this republic is not due to the Democrats. After all, for decades we have known the Democrat Party's ruling elite to be ideologically driven by theories farther left than Marx (and Mars.) They are doing to the country exactly what they have told us they were going to do.

The nation's problem is the Republican Party, or rather the lack of one. Somewhere in the 1940's, the GOP Thought Squad somehow figured out that the default position of the American people was basically Democrat. By then, after 4 terms of Roosevelt, the bureaucracy was firmly entrenched, and cabinet agencies and the bureaucracy were staffed top to bottom by Democrats.

"WTF," somebody up there thought, "we're goin' nowhere, why don't we take advantage of this and just make sure we get our cut?"

They traded responsibility, adherence to Constitutional law, and sound fiscal management for safe seats and power/perks/pork just as eternal as their Democrat colleagues across the aisle.

The GOPe grew rich and powerful. Their reasoning usually worked. The only flaw in the RINO/GOPe/Rove thought process is that they have no plan for that inevitable day when their whole lucrative deal collapses. That is, they have no plan for us. Rest assured that their personal asses are well covered.

The ancient Greeks recognized that all democratic systems go broke. Some quickly. Some slowly. It's just arithmetic. The finale begins when those in power realize that they can write checks on the public monies to those who will, in return, keep them in power. In a phenomenally rich country such as ours, the breakdown has been slow. But it has accelerated at a breakneck pace under the past TWO Presidents, bringing us from a Recession in 2008 to the full scale Depression taking place in 2014.

The Cycle: Democracy, Poverty, Oligarchy, Tyranny, Revolution. We are floundering somewhere near national Poverty and blundering ourselves well into Oligarchy.

The Founders understood the cycle very well. To stall it, they invented our Republic made up of sovereign states, ruled by democratic processes overseen by the courts and executives on every level. It was Ben Franklin's "A Republic if we can keep it."

But states are no longer sovereign. When something like an Obama can win a national election and the other team offers a McCain, it's obvious we can't keep the Republic. Not for long, anyway. That's especially true when half the eligible citizenry can't be bothered to vote, and their leaders make sure that ineligible non-citizens do, to keep themselves in power.
