Conservative groups like Heritage Action and the Club for Growth are leading the charge to gradually devolve transportation funding to individual states, arguing they would be in better position to determine their own projects without being dependent on Washington.

So will the interstate highway system now become the intra state highway system?

One of the problems with the “interstate highway system” is that in many areas it doesn’t really serve its intended function. When the IHS was established in 1956 it was supposed to support interstate commerce. It wasn’t supposed to involve the construction of thousands of lane-miles of highways in metropolitan areas that are now used mainly by local commuters. I would suggest that this type of roadway should be given a different classification in the national highway network, and turned over to state/local oversight and control.
