The Earth got its annual checkup, and according to climate scientists around the globe, it looks as though its fever is continuing to rise.

NOAA released the 24th annual State of the Climate report, on July 17 2014, including data compiled by 425 scientists in 57 countries. According to Thomas Karl, director of NOAA's National Climatic Data Center, "The climate is changing more rapidly in today's world than at any time in modern civilization." When asked how he would rate the health of the planet, he compared it to how a person might look at unwanted weight gain over time. "We're continuing to see ourselves put more weight on from year to year," he said.

Here are more highlights:

Greenhouse gases continued to climb.

The Earth's surface continues to warm.

Sea surface temperatures increased.

Sea level rose.

The Arctic sea ice extent remained low as temperatures climbed.

Tropical cyclones near average overall but extreme weather events became more extreme.

Antarctic sea ice extent reached record high for second year in a row; South Pole station set record high temperature.

Don’t forget that one of the main NOAA offices is in Boulder Colorado, the land of the legalized loco weed. Boulder has been known for decades as a drug center of North America.

Question: how do you normalize between measuring temperatures with non-calibrated mercury thermometers (as they were taken in previous centuries) and digital thermometers accurate to within a tenth of a degree? Even with a calibrated thermometer, the way you take the temperature changes the reading—for instance, wet bulb vs. dry bulb methods. For historical comparisons, the data set just isn’t there because methodologies have changed.

Too bad we super intelligent humans weren’t around just before the last ice age so we could have fixed that. Just think how hot it would be now if that were the case. Whew! I’m sweatin’ just thinkin’ about it.

We are a couple years away from re-visiting the Alaska glaciers, always a good ride and scenic opportunities abound,, next cruise is Asia tho, hopefully efforts will have brought success in enhancing the levels of the environment wherever we visit... Shanghai! Beijing! Both are trying to clear the air..
Good luck!

Hope we get good weather this fall!
