Commenting on all the James Garner threads. RIP Jim, you are already missed.

My friend’s dad said about James Garner “every home should have one”.

How true is that?

Since my first name is Bart, I always appreciated seeing that character since the name is not common within my birth year group. “Maverick” was a treasured show of my youth and I recently had the occasion to catch episodes in the afternoons as I recovered from shoulder surgery. Still enjoyable after over 50 years...

RIP James Garner.

I think he said he was wounded in the ___ by friendly fire from U.S. aircraft as he dove headlong into a foxhole.

:)

He usually played the nice guy, but he could do some serious drama. In The Streets of Laredo, he plays Capt Woodrow Call,
the role made by famous by Tommy Lee Jones. Garner’s Woodrow Call is a no-nonsense, certified badass. Check out the movie if you’ve not already seen it.

“He was an old school Hollywood lib, but a great actor. R.I.P., Jimbo.”

At least he was like the majority of old time actors who kept their mouth shut about their personal politics and did not allow politics to get in the way of their acting job.

As Laura Ingraham’s book title said: “Shut Up & Sing”

“Although Garner is a lifelong liberal Democrat, his oldest friend is a conservative Republican.”

Wasn’t he the sheriff that stuck his finger in Walter Brennan’s colt in Support Your Local Sheriff ?

Best scene ever....

Wasn’t he on his way to Austrailia ?

RIP Rockfish.

“Rockford!”

One of the most entertaining actors ever, IMHO.

Ha ha, yes! It is so ridiculous to give a cause of death for someone that old. Something just wears out eventually.

Headline should have been, “Another Old Liberal Gas Bag Bites the Dust”

In his 2011 memoir The Garner Files, James dished on Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger, two notable Hollywood Republicans. As quoted in Variety:

“In my opinion, Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn’t qualified to be governor of California. Ronald Reagan wasn’t qualified to be governor, let alone president.”

Also in his memoir, James recounts being approached about running for U.S. Congress as a Republican in 1962.

“It didn’t stop them when I told them I was a Democrat…. They just thought I could win.”

He was again approached about running for office, this time for Governor of California in 1990, and again turned the opportunity down.

“There’s one difference between me and [Schwarzenegger and Reagan]: I know I’m not qualified.”

Here’s your gasbag...

“He then went to Korea for 14 months in the Regular Army, serving in the 5th Regimental Combat Team in the Korean War. He was wounded twice, first in the face and hand from shrapnel fire from a mortar round, and second on April 23, 1951 in the buttocks from friendly fire from U.S. fighter jets as he dove headfirst into a foxhole.”

For my money, Rockford Files is the best non Star Trek show ever made.

Godspeed Mr Garner.
