Geez, panicking and crying wolf over everything, isn’t useful or adult.
The goal is to be accurate and realistic, not screaming the same panic and call of total destruction “the end is near” at every noise you hear.

That was the Spanish flu only a 2.5 mortality rate. I was also back before travel was as easy and as prevalent as it is today.
