A German Army General has been appointed to Chief of Staff of U.S. Army Europe. This is the first time a non-U.S. officer has held this position.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Aerospace_Defense_Command

Above is a link explaining the bi-command structure of NORAD. An American four star and a Canadian three star. I had thought that at one time or another a Canadian was in command but didn’t find a reference to that.

I don’t know what the German will command. I had thought that US forces never served under a foreign commander. In WW1 the allies desperately lobbied to use the US forces as piecemeal replacements for their losses. But the general in command refused, so it must have been up to him. He held them out of combat as long as possible as they were insufficiently trained. Then he relented and threw them into battle (Bellow Wood?) to save the allies bacon and, as I recall, we took multi-thousand casualties, which was common in nearly every battle then.

If a foreign commander lost significant US forces lives I’d imagine that would cause a significant political problem at home. Anybody know if this position commands people or is it advisory?

“Is this pay back to Merkel for the NSA spying on Germany?”

Interesting thought! Maybe the new head honcho is bought and paid for? Obama seems to have to goods on almost all of the higher ups in the US.

The Chief of Staff does not command combat forces. He serves as major staff assistant to the Commanding General of U.S. forces in Europe, who is an American.

Thank you, I was wondering about that high level of the position. I know pilots from other countries train a lot at the bases here, but Chief of Staff?

I agree. This Administration is shredding the Constitution and using a wrecking ball on this Country every day. Wonder if President Jarrett was in on the decision?

Do the troops need to refer to him as Herr Brigadegeneral, or will Sir suffice?

My question is Why? Use a US Army officer and employ the German Gen. as a “liason”? Why the “Chief of Staff”?

Well, Obama allowed Interpol to have immunity and jurisdiction on US soil above Constitutional limits since 2009, so that’s your foreign police force, with roots in the Nazi regime FTR (shared headquarters with the Gestapo during the war, and even appointed SS officers as their presidents during the 60s).

I am tellin’ ya, we the people need to put a stop to this guy. Basically they are doing most of this behind our backs.

We are going to wake up with the official announcement one of these days that we no longer are America. Our country has been stolen and a coup has happened.

So disgusting.

Thank you for that link. I imagine as Chief of Staff, you would see a LOT of classified material and have input on decisions? I wonder what those that serve in this division, the Jr. Officers and enlisted think?

Well, the Germans did hand the Russians quite a beating. Pound for pound the Germans were superior, they just couldn't cope with the sheer amount of Russian bodies coming towards them.

The Soviets trademarked that old tactic of only giving the first wave of soldiers guns, so after they died wave 2 would pick them up and go a bit further, wave 3 a bit further after that...Then we had to deal with the same sh** from the Koreans. Unfortunately for the Koreans, Americans just don't lose.

Army too - we cross train a lot more than is thought. Allies, at least, and I can’t speak for the Navy, they do things differently, since they have different priorities. After all, getting each others routines down is vital.

But Chief? That’s a no in my book. Too risky.

He certainly does and it’s amazing that no “leaks” ever spring about Barry.

only saving grace is a chief of staff doesn’t have direct operational control of units... but does have significant input to the commmanding officer

Chief of Staff is a bitch position. And a token thrown to the Germans to gains some 'trust' back.

Another reason would be the limited choices available to do this. Part of is the location, Europe. It makes sense to put the German there so he can quickly interact with his home turf and such.

Thank you. But what exactly might he assist in and why not appoint a US Army officer? Was there no one qualified?
