Ben Carson Takes Major Step Toward Presidential Campaign Former neurosurgeon launches PAC, names national chairman

By John Solomon-August 1, 2014

Ben Carson, the former neurosurgeon turned conservative sensation, is taking a major step toward a 2016 presidential bid by forming a political action committee and selecting the man who would run his campaign, The Washington Times has learned.

Emerging from two-days of meetings with supporters in Palm Beach, Fla., Dr. Carson told the Times on Friday morning he has selected Houston businessman Terry Giles to be his 2016 campaign chairman should he run and approved the formation of a PAC called One Nation.

“Now is the time to start all of the appropriate exploration and investigation, and put down the structure that is necessary,” Dr. Carson said in a phone interview.

Asked about the likelihood he will run for president in 2016, Dr. Carson said: “I would say we are definitely a step or two closer than we were a year ago.”

I’d like to see Ben Carson run for Mayor of Detroit. He’s a popular hometown hero there and could bring some common sense thinking to inspire the people to be more.

Sorry can’t support a guy who isn’t sure what kind of weapons are OK for the average American to own and carry. Carson needs to get his feet wet by running for Congress or something.

I agree that he should get his feet wet by running for Congress, or governor, or something like that. But if by some miracle he wins the GOP nomination, I'll work hard for his election. While he may or may not be a little squishy on the second amendment, it's not something he's gonna push. Overriding any misgivings he has about "semi-automatic" weapons, he's a constitutionalist and intellectually honest. He would work for the rule of law and can be reasoned with and educated on those issues he's not quite as knowledgeable about. In any case, he's light years ahead of any (and I mean ANY) democrat.

The man said what he said.

Whatever he says now as he seeks power is where the lie is found.

I won’t vote for this man.

Did I not say his views have matured?

Now go to his webpage and see his EXACT stance. Again, you are free to contact John Sousa and he will explain.

But to say he is anti 2nd Amendment is a BOLDFACE LIE.

The Constitutional Amendment 2A shall not be infringed. Carson IS anti-2A. Unless you count the Klintoon meaning of is.

It will be like dropping a goldfish into a piranha tank.

Good analogy. I've never really been pro or con Ben Carson. I'm still not committed one way or the other. But let's think about this for a second:

One thing that's stuck in my mind about him is, "what is his campaign message going to be?"

"Vote for me, because I'm black and conservative"?

Really, we have spent nearly 8 years pointing out how a nobody with Zero experience can and is destroying the country but then we're gonna turn right around and say, "Vote for THIS black guy with no experience because, well, HE'S CONSERVATIVE!"

Really? That's what we want our strategy to be in 2016? Don't get me wrong, I'd still vote for him over a Romney, but really, come on, I think we can do better...

And now it's looking like he's not, at least consistently pro-second Amendment.

I can accept that his stance on guns has “matured” but I still want to give him another 10 years or so to confirm it.

Who is John Sousa?

Maybe Ben Carson should explain himself with his own mouth.

From what I’ve read, I believe you are mistaken about that.

Some have taken offense that I wrote that Carson is anti-2A.

Others have said that his own website claims otherwise.

Let me be clear: I heard his views expressed BY CARSON HIMSELF 2 months ago when he filled in for a local radio host.

Carson took a special moment aside to be very clear on his 2A views - to make a point of his stance on the subject.

And they were:

1. Gun registration is necessary to protect the population, deter crime, and catch criminals. One month later, Carson went on another program and said that he was “moderating” his views on registration. (Seriously? If you believe that you are a fool.)

2. No one in the large U.S. cities should be permitted to own firearms unless they are locked up at the local Police precinct.

3. Firearms permits must be required for gun ownership.

4. Mandatory training.

5. He entertained the proposal of waiting periods for ammunition sales, but did not specifically agree to it.

6. Manadatory 3 to 5-day waiting periods on all gun sales nation-wide.

7. Close the “gun show loop-hole.” I.E. dis-allow private gun sales among the citizenry.

I heard him say these things with his OWN mouth. You can get as mad as you want to, but this is what he actually said.

Anything he may now write on a “campaign” website, a mere 2 months later, is BS.

Aside from everything above - I like Carson a lot, but think that he should not run for President.

That just shows hoploignorance, not hoplophobia.

A little education is all he needs.

It’s not brain surgery! :)

I don’t personally feel this way but my theory is that the American public in 2016 is going to want to elect a good looking white guy. The only two candidates on my radar are Rick Perry and Ted Cruz.

Wow. So in your world, a man cannot study, and reason, and come to a realization that old views are wrong.

With your self righteous approach, nobody is nor will be qualified to hold any office of any kind.

Dr Carson has not given anyone to doubt his sincerity and authenticity

I used to think slavery caused the Civil War. I used to think Jesus was a myth. I used to think government was supposed to provide personal protection from all things.

He was a pediatric neurosurgeon. I don't fault the man for not having a thorough understanding of such things because that wasn't his realm. Heck, I applaud him for changing his stance.

Look him up. I'm sorry Dr Carson couldn't drop by your house and tell you himself. Unfortunately he's busy.

But his statements on the 2nd Amendment are prominently displayed on his page.

Many thanks.

I tend to agree with that judgment at this point. I still have more to learn about the man. I’m disappointed in what I learned today, though. :-(

Our next President needs to understand the Law, our Rights, the Constitution, and he needs to show allegiance to those things - AS WRITTEN.

To say that you respect the 2A - but that you have new ideas and ways to change it does not show me that you actually understand it, it’s history, nor its purpose. And that means that you just aren’t safe to be in a position of Federal authority.

He’ll make a great Governor.

It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to be President but if one volunteers, it might be a good thing to pay very close attention.
