I agree with your skepticism. In the upper Midwest, it was a very cold spring, and July was also cooler than normal in Minnesota. Just where do they go to find the “hottest year” on record for the planet?
They utter phrases such as this and expect everyone to genuflect before their dogmas.

Bastard says that June was the 15th hottest June during the period 1981-2013. So how does that make it the hottest on record? Was the AC unit broken in the NYT’s newsroom?
