Bill for Obamacare blunder: $173M

The cost of providing free taxpayer-funded coverage to Bay Staters unable to sign up for Obamacare because of Massachusetts’ disastrous website problems has soared to $173 million, according to a new Patrick administration report.

Some 251,280 Bay Staters are now on the free transitional coverage — basically Medicaid — marking an increase of about 50,000 people since April that one watchdog found alarming.

“There should be a red siren going off for state budget writers and taxpayers about the cost of this, and yet there seems to be very little alarm,” said Joshua Archambault of the Pioneer Institute. “There will be a big bill due when they run the eligibility for these individuals at the end of the year.”

“They’re still not giving a full accounting of how much this is costing,” Archambault said.

What the Republicans should be pointing out is how that wasted money could have been used for much better purpose.

Yes, I know that the general feeling here would be to ‘give it back to the taxpayers’, and I don’t disagree, but I think it is important to realize that we are in a public relations war with this administration. I think the public has to some extent been desensitized to big numbers. When the story line is ‘173M dollar blunder’, it’s just another big number. Maybe it would help to put it into some kind of perspective. Like:

‘175M would have repaved x miles of highway and employed x numbers of workers.’
‘175M would allow the hiring of x numbers of additional police officers, or firefighters.’
‘175M would allow a $500 tax refund for 350,000 people.’
‘175M would feed x number of children for x days in these countries’.
etc.

If we did this with a different example every time there is government waste, it maybe it would help people to realize just how disgusting this is. Just a thought.

“The cost of providing free taxpayer-funded coverage...”

Do they employ editors anymore? I’m sure, coming from the B.H., they didn’t even bat an eye typing that sentence.

I’m thinking the $175Million admitted in this article is just a small part of what this mess has cost the nation in total.

If you factored in FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) it would be in the trillions.

Yep, and the true cost hasn't begun to be realized.
