The mind is quite the mystery. Way beyond the scientific method, especially in individual cases.
I probably personally would have pegged the needle on that thing... and so what. That’s only one small facet of the issue.
God never lets a challenge into this world wantonly. This kind, included. Perceiving the larger spiritual battle and yielding to the eternally advantageous combatant, always wins the game. A capacity to yield to the devil’s call to destroy oneself might also reflect in a special positive capacity in God’s service, perhaps a degree of yielding to God (and gaining the according blessing) that few others would find possible.
