A Family Tree to Explain How President Obama and Milton Wolf Are Related
Washington Post ^ | August 4 | Philip Bump

Stories about Milton Wolf, the conservative physician aiming to unseat Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) on Tuesday, always include one particularly interesting detail: The guy running to the right of the incumbent Republican senator is also a second cousin to the president of the United States.

What's not usually articulated is precisely how the two are related. In short, Wolf's mother was cousins with Obama's grandmother. But the story is a bit more interesting than that.

We pieced together the family tree from a number of sources: a tombstone database, online genealogy sites, old newspapers. Giving us this family tree, with the Obama branch at left and the Wolf branch at right. It's explained below.

The common ancestors are Thomas McCurry and Margaret Belle Wright. (We know about their lives and children thanks to this overview of Obama's history.) But we get a little more detail from a 2009 interview with Wolf's mother, Anna McCurry Wolf. Her father's family, she said, "migrated into Kentucky, and Illinois is where my grandfather lived; Alten, Illinois." That's Thomas. "And he, at age three, shook President Lincoln's hand

In short, Wolf's mother was cousins with Obama's grandmother.

That makes them second-cousins-once-removed.

The 800lb IF in the room is, IF you believe THIS version of Hussein's berf!

Hussein is the ONLY name that hasn't changed on his half dozen aliases.

What kind of president operates under an alias?

I don't think anyone is questioning the contention that Stanley Ann Dunham was Barry's mother.

ACTUALLY there is one version that claims Obama’s parents are Stanley Dunham (Stanly Ann’s father) and a black prostitute. There are no pictures of Stanley Ann pregnant. Stanley Ann got tired of taking care of her father’s child and sent him back home to Hawaii (is part of the story).

DNA Tests: How about some DNA tests to prove that Obama really has relatives in Kansas?

1. Of course, Obama will never submit to such tests.

2. Obama's daughters: But what about Obama's daughters?

3. In a few years, they will be of age and legally able to do what they want. Obama won't be able to stop them from submitting to DNA tests. DNA tests are becoming better and cheaper with each passing year. For instance, online companies like ANCESTRY.COM offer DNA testing for only a small fee, I believe.

4. Grandchildren: And what about the children his two daughters will have? They may want to find out their true background someday.

5. My point is this: Sometime down the road, Obama's two daughters and future grandchildren may start to wonder about their true backgrounds, so they might be tempted---out of curiosity---to find out if Obama'a mother is really the woman from Kansas. They may be tempted to submit to DNA tests and compare their DNA results to the DNA results of "relatives " back in Kansas, supposedly the state of Obama's "mother's birth.

6. Results of Obama's two daughters and future grandchildren DNA tests? I say that we will find out that Obama was never related to his "cousin" from Kansas who is running for office in 2014. And when the public finds out this information, all hell will break loose.

How about DNA tests that prove his two daughters are actually his and Moochelle’s? Ever see a photo of Moochelle pregnant?

Hell won’t break loose over anything Obama says or does until the texting/twittering/facebooking public (with the exception of a very small group) are suddenly unable to text, twitter, etc.

Let me see.... if Madelyn Payne and Anna McCurry were first cousins, Anna’s children and Madelyn were second cousins. So, Madelyn’s child, Stanley Ann would be Anna’s third cousin. Stanley’s child would be Anna’s fourth cousin.

Is that what once removed means? I am not familiar with that term.

The part about Thomas McCurry shaking hands with President Lincoln when he was 3 doesn't quite add up. If McCurry was born in 1850, he was 10 when Lincoln was elected. When McCurry was 3, Lincoln was not very famous--that was 5 years before the Lincoln-Douglas debates--so how would the family have remembered the incident?

McCurry's wife was born in 1869. When I was a kid I knew someone who was born in 1869--the mother of a friend of my grandmother's, who lived into her 90s.

It's at point 6 that your scenario breaks down and collapses. Any such test results would never be made public. In fact, the greatest efforts would be undertaken to ensure that not even the testers know whose samples they are testing.

Do you have a cousin? Does that cousin have any children? They are your first-cousins once removed.

By the same token: The cousins of your parents are your first-cousins once-removed.

Thanks. Here they are referred to as second cousins. I’ve never heard “once removed” before. Maybe it is a colloquial thing.

My first cousin’s children are my second cousins. My parents’ first cousins are my second cousins.

"Once removed" refers to the difference in generations. Wikipedia says:

The ordinals in the terms "first cousins", "second cousins", "third cousins", refer to the number of generations to one's closest common ancestor. When the cousins are not the same generation, they are described as "removed". In this case, the smaller number of generations to the common ancestor is used to determine the degree, and the difference in generations determines the number of times removed. Note that the ages of the cousins are irrelevant to the definition of the cousin relationship.

My first cousin’s children are my second cousins. My parents’ first cousins are my second cousins.

Then what are your parents' cousins' children to you?

According to my understanding, first cousins have the same grandparents, second cousins have the same great-grandparents, third cousins have the same great-great-grandparents, and so on.

The "once-removed" or "twice-removed" then refers to a generational skip.

Perhaps, in modern America, there is no longer a need to express these relationships with such precision.

But thanks for your feedback!

This is very interesting to me. Thanks for your information.

My parents’ cousins’ children would be my parents’ second cousins, therefore my third cousins...and I have known many of them....even a few fourth cousins. First cousins share the same grandparents but with a child of your first cousin, their grandparents would be your first cousin’s parents, thus, your aunt and uncle. As your second cousin, their great grandparents would be your grandparents...and so on.

To my knowledge, second cousins are usually a generation younger and that may be what you are referring to as “once removed”.

I’m not into ancestry but maybe I should be....it appears interesting.

Have a good one!

Of course they should check the DNA of Zero with Malcolm X, just in case those pics are right.
