A Detroit jury ruled today that Theodore Wafer was guilty of murder in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Renisha McBride on his porch.

The jury, which consists of seven men and five women, began its deliberations on Wednesday after nine days of testimony.

Wafer, 55, is charged with second degree murder and manslaughter for shooting and killing McBride, 19, last November when the teenager showed up inebriated on his porch at 4:40 a.m. Wafer said he could only make out a figure around his house, said the person pounded on his door and made him fear for his life.

If someone came banging on my porch door at that hour (in Detroit, no less) I’d certainly have feared for my life.

Me too and the last thing I'd do is open the door. I'd call the police and wait in the farthest room of the house.

Simple burglars don’t tend to knock on the front door but home invaders often do. Such things used to be called “hot” burglaries, going into a house when the occupants are present and awake.

Pounded on his door - she was outside, not inside, and he feared for his life. Okay.

Like Biden suggested. A shotgun fired through the door.

I dont think it even warranted a warning shot. Perhaps if she broke a window or tried rushing into the house.

Is this the guy who shot that little girl who was knocking on his front door?

This guy is living in such a maze of terror that he's really better off locked up where he can't harm himself or anyone else. I have to assume that something horrible has happened to him in the past to make him so fearful.

Anyway, I hope they find a safe place for him.

She wasn’t exactly a little girl. 19 and 180 pounds. The media wanted to make this another Trayvon trial

I lived in a bad area in my younger days and had the early A.M. door pounding. Somehow I figured out that if they were pounding on my door they were probably lost, wasted or in trouble. I could usually ascertain that by a conversation through the door. I never shot anyone. Now if they somehow made it to my side of the door things are different. All that being said and with my limited knowledge of this case I probably side with the jury.

Wasn't she 5'4" or something like that?

This world is full of horrors for a guy like this guy - dive-bombing hummingbirds, cats and dogs, people flying by on motorcycles, etc. He needs to be in a safe place.

Oh, I didn’t get that. He was definitely too quick to pull the trigger, especially if it was a quiet town. If so, why the panic?

Yes, I agree with you on this case — that was the correct result.
I was speaking more generally.

Home invasions start with a pounding on the door to split the door jamb and drive the door open.

I’ve actually had one inside my little cottage at about 3:00am, drunk as all get out and eating my fruit cake.

I ushered him back out the door and walked him down the alley to get him headed away from my house.

I will admit that I come on a lot of police shooting threads to question the actions of dog shooting, mental patient shooting, kid shooting etc. By the same token I expect homeowners with guns to exercise restraint. If you shoot someone you should be held accountable as the facts warrant it. Someone knocking on your door is not fair game.

As to your case of someone being in the house eating your fruitcake, I probably would have thanked him for disposing of that toxic material:) Actually in court you would have had justification and your actions indicate someone with wisdom.

I once had an individual pounding on my door after dark, around 8PM or so. It was winter so dark early. He was pounding so hard the walls were rattling. I picked up the phone, dialed 911 and on the way to my bathroom grabbed my personal defense weapon. I told the nice lady who answered what was going on, that I was well armed and if the person gained entry I would defend myself. Right then, the person got in his vehicle and I could see him backing around the house. Then I got really scared.

I never even considered opening my door.

Turned out it was a guy who had called earlier about a truck my husband had for sale. I had told him no one was home to show him the truck and to call back later when my husband could speak to him. He told the officer who came that it was the only time he could look at the truck so he decided to just look at it anyhow, in the dark. Wearing camo. It was hunting season... but still an odd story.

I think that even if a person isn’t ever planning on carrying a gun, they should take the concealed carry class. Lots to consider when handling a gun for self defense.
