The government, local and national, are not going to protect you. Prepare yourselves to protect yourself and your family. If you do not know how to use a weapon, LEARN how, buy one and be prepared to protect yourself and your family. I carry. I have the permit that allows me too. I will defend myself according to the law. I will defend myself according to protecting me and mine. You need to learn to do the same. My local sheriff told me it will take THIRTY minutes to get a car out to our area. I will be long dead by the time they get here. PROTECT YOURSELF. Learn how to use a weapon. Learn how to defend yourself. Take a self defense course with a weapon. Buy one and keep it close. I have an alarm in my home to alert us when someone is trying to come in. If he gets into the house, then he is coming in to do harm to you and your family. You have a human right to protect yourself and your family. Do so.
All good suggestions. But also look at where you are located relative to the threat, and what it will take for the threat to get from where it starts to your doorstep.
I live, by design, in the exurbs/outer suburbs. I have something of a natural layered defense. To get to me the threat needs to cross the urban business district, then the urban hipster area, then the inner suburbs then the ring of landed wealthy THEN a Run (creek) large enough to handle 40’ cabin cruisers across which are only two bridges.
Behind me are a couple hundred miles of farms and small towns.
I figure that the threat won’t just hop in it’s cars and come right out to me. It’ll either burn itself out long before it gets to the Run and Bridges (which the local cops and possibly armed citizenry will defend as good choke points) or I’ll have enough lead time to retreat to safer ground ...
No offense intended, but that mindset is part of the problem. Any permit requirement is a clear violation of our rights. What part of "shall not be infringed" do they fail to understand?
