Second death within hours at Chess Olympics

A second chess player died at the Norway Chess Olympiad in Tromsø on Thursday.

Police and medics were called to one of city's top hotels after the deceased was found alone in a hotel room at 10.30pm.

The male victim is the second chess participant to die on the same day, after a 67-year-old man collapsed and died in the main play arena while playing his match yesterday.

The second dead man was found in the Radisson Blu hotel in Tromsø on Thursday evening, a reporter from iTromso confirmed to The Local.

Police chief Gunnar Baardsen said to NTB: "There is no suspicion about anything criminal going on. This is a natural death." Jarle Heitmann, head of communication for the Chess Olympiad, confirmed to the newspaper “Nordlys”, a person was found dead on Thursday evening, but ask people to contact the police for more information.

Yesterday, in the main chess tournament hall, an elderly man died of a heart attack at around 4pm. Panic spread among players and spectators when some mistook the medic's defibrillator for an armed weapon and a terror attack was feared. Play was delayed for a few hours at the Olympiad on Thursday.

Troms police will release more information about the second death later on Friday.

I heard that in a 4 hour chess game their pulse is at 120 for the whole 4 hours.

Well sure.. he can pawn that claim off on the masses, but what do you figure the chess world is dealing with a perp who has a checkered past?

Sounds like a perfect case for Lt. Columbo.

"Columbo" The Most Dangerous Match (TV Episode 1973) - IMDb

A chess player murders his opponent before a big match. Lt. Columbo must out-maneuver this crafty, but craven, killer.

Co-starring Laurence Harvey and Lloyd Bochner.

Big-time chess is indeed a young man’s game. The very best players don’t stay among the very best much past 40, and many peak much earlier than that.

Chess is, after all, an exciting game which is highly strenuous physically; it’s just a wonder it doesn’t kill more players.

Perhaps it should be outlawed?

Except that a dead man can win at chess, if the opponent’s clock expires.
