Ted Cruz rallies to the support of his friend and political rival Rick Perry
Examiner ^ | August 16, 2014 | Mark Whittington

In a sign that the indictment of Texas Gov. Rick Perry for abuse of office and coercion may not be having the political effects some have hoped for, Sen. Ted Cruz, the Republican junior senator from Texas, has taken to his Facebook page to express support for the governor. Cruz is considered a possible rival to Perry for the Republican nomination for president in 2016. However differences are being set aside, at least for the time being, to rally around Perry.

“Unfortunately, there has been a sad history of the Travis County District Attorney's Office engaging in politically-motivated prosecutions, and this latest indictment of the governor is extremely questionable. Rick Perry is a friend, he's a man of integrity – I am proud to stand with Rick Perry. The Texas Constitution gives the governor the power to veto legislation, and a criminal indictment predicated on the exercise of his constitutional authority is, on its face, highly suspect.”

Cruz, an honors graduate of Harvard Law School, served as Texas Solicitor General for a time, having been appointed to that post by current Texas Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott. Cruz also taught Supreme Court litigation at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, a subject he is somewhat familiar with as he argued a number of cases before that court as solicitor general. He currently serves in the United States Senate and is said to harbor higher political ambitions.

Cruz’s endorsement of Perry suggests that, at least in the short term, Perry’s indictment has had the effect of raising his popularity among conservatives. Whether this will last if the case drags on, a certain hope by Democratic partisans, remains unclear. Also unclear is how many other Republican office holders, especially potential presidential

I suspect the Texas AG and soon to be Governor Gonzalez might have something to say about this travesty. Travis County just jumped the shark!

This has got to be a GOP dirty trick to make the dems look stupid. Those charges don’t even stand up to the lightest of scrutiny.

Do you think Perry asked to be thrown into this briar patch?

When the facts become known to the rest of the country, isn’t this going to back-fire bigtime?

Lack of collegiality has indeed set up GOP candidates into a position where “they hang separately.”

I doubt that it is Cruz that is doing the calculating. It is Cruz’s God.

While every one of the Republicans on the short and long lists would be much better at the job ("president", not "golfer") than the current resident, I don't see any really outstanding candidates yet.

By August 1950, Eisenhower hadn't even started his last job (1st Supreme Allied Commander Europe) before being elected President.

Hats off to Cruz and Perry. Obviously, the Dem’s objective was to have Cruz disavow, infuriating conservatives all over the country.

Yup. Ronnie Earl may be gone, but his criminality lives on in that office.

The suspicion, raised by some, is that the indictment is little more than political payback for Perry’s opposition to Obama administration policies, especially where it concerns the southern border.

You don't say.

Damn right it is. This was a well orchestrated dnc attack event for Perry's stand at the border. Check the timing on tweets from national party members, as this story broke.

When it becomes widely known that Perry was trying to defund a drunken (.23 blood alcohol at her dui) politically motivated wench, I think the blowback on this will be quick and severe. The woman had no business prosecuting anyone. He'll be a hero when its over.

And btw, I am not a Perry fan, but a Cruz supporter.

The Integrity unit is going to be transferred to the control of the State AG where it belongs rather than the Travis County Prosecutor’s office. Too much Prosecutor abuse of authority.

Kay Bailey Hutchison was also charged with something or other during her term in the Senate by the Travis County Prosecutor and other Republicans have been the subject of the ire of this Demo outhouse. Just normal for Texas politics if you are a Republican.

I’m reading there is no transcript or recording of what the Grand Jurors were presented to persuade them to indict.

I wonder how many Williamson Co., Lakeway, Cedar Park, Leander $$ can be withheld from Austin.

Sadly the public attention span fades.
Mitt, love him or hate him, tried to communicate a bullet point approach.
15 is to much for the short attention span theater that is modern politics.

I say start with three to five.
Borders
Defense
Taxes

I have already contacted my state rep and senator to initiate legislation to extract the prosecutory powers in these types of matters from Travis County to the Texas AG office where it belongs.

I challenge all other Texas Freepers to do the same, as the left has escalated the war, and we need to fight back.

Here's what worries me at the moment, Doc. In the Fall election, the non-Democrats have a real shot at carrying both Houses.

OK. So what happens then? What happens to Boehner? McConnell, Reid, Graham? ... is it going to be a typical 'Republican' Congress, with business as usual, and the real structural reforms needed to be ignored again?

The current Depression looks like it will take until the mid 20's to finally go away. Will we be a centralized Socialist state by then?
