Yes, they did. I believe that it gave them a sense of purpose. I’ve heard of many men who retire at 65 and die within a few months.

Personally I can’t see retiring after watching my father do it. I’d go stark raving nuts.

That being said, I’m afraid this proves future Democrat proposals for the Teresa Ghilarducci giant centrally nationalized pension plan and a Super-Duper Social Security program are gonna get ‘em a lot of votes.

Most of them because they had no savings - which is why SS was "invented."

That’s why this country is so great. People used to have control over their own destinies and were able to create enough wealth to grow it so they could support themselves without having to work till they dropped dead.

That’s because many of them didn’t live much longer than sixty or sixty-five. People live longer now. But few seventy year olds can do the kind of physical work they could do just ten years earlier. Age will do that to you.
