Islamic State militants have released a video purportedly showing the beheading of a US journalist who went missing two years ago.
The footage appears to show a masked man - speaking in English with traces of a British accent - killing James Foley, who was seized by armed men in Syria in November 2012.
In the five-minute video, posted on social media sites by Islamic State sources, the group declares that Mr Foley was killed after Barack Obama ordered airstrikes against IS positions in northern Iraq.
The group also claimed to be holding another American journalist, Steven Sotloff, and said his life depended on the US president's next move.
White House National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said the administration had seen the video but had not yet confirmed its authenticity.
She said that if it is verified by the intelligence community, the US would be "appalled by the brutal murder of an innocent American journalist".

Ordinarily one would be horrified by the beheading of an American. However, I wonder is horror or sadness is warranted by the beheading of a journalist? The treasonous behavior of journalists since the Vietnam war to date certainly dampens ones feelings.
Absolutely! I’ll pray for him! In the meanwhile, how can I donate funds towards travel expenses for more “journalists” to go over there?
It has been years since my IR class and still remember liberals gasping when the professor said, “war is simply the final stage of the diplomatic process, it is a stage of diplomacy that is no less legitimate than a summit meeting or any other interactions between states.”
It’s true. They not only have nothing to run on, they have more and more disasters, scandals and negative outcomes piling up on them daily. But, I think they’d be doing this race-baiting drum beat in Ferguson no matter what. It’s who they are.

I watched the Daniel Pearl video, so I would understand the essence of this enemy. I can’t bring myself to watch this one.

The media sedition and treason started in the Korean war. I remember that as I was old enough to pay some attention to the news. As an aside can’t you just imagine a journalist , in 1942, interviewing Adolf Hitler “to get his point of view!” Can’t you just imagine in 1943 an American actress(say Myrna Loy) being photographed sitting on an 88 millimeter antiaircraft gun surrounded by smiling German soldiers!
