After Hitting Shaheen on Immigration, Brown Closes Gap in New Hampshire
Weekly Standard ^ | 9:00 AM, Aug 22, 2014 | Michael Warren

Scott Brown, the Republican Senate candidate in New Hampshire who has struggled to gain traction against his opponent Jeanne Shaheen, is within two points of the incumbent Democrat in a new poll from WMUR and the University of New Hampshire. The poll shows Shaheen with 46 percent support and Brown, the former GOP senator from Massachusetts, with 44 percent. The previous WMUR-UNH poll, from June, showed Shaheen with a 12-point lead over Brown, 52 percent to 40 percent.

After Hitting Shaheen on Immigration, Brown Closes Gap in New Hampshire

This is the closest poll of the race since January, with most giving Shaheen a comfortable lead. Even with the latest WMUR poll, the Democrat still has a 6.6-point average lead. The only other poll in recent months to show Brown within single digits was an NBC News poll giving Shaheen an 8-point advantage.

If the race is indeed tightening as the latest poll suggests, what could explain Shaheen's drop? Brown, despite having national name recognition and having represented New Hampshire's next-door neighbor in the Senate, may have been hurt early on by charges of carpetbaggery. While Brown did own a home in New Hampshire for years, Shaheen is something of a Granite State political institution, having served three two-year terms as its governor. Brown has spent the summer quietly meeting with voters across the state to establish his New Hampshire bona fides, and he's all but locked up the Republican nomination.

But Brown has also focused heavily on the issue of illegal immigration in television advertisements over the past few weeks, first highlighting security differences between the airport and the southern border, then hitting Shaheen more directly over her position on the Gang of 8 immigration bill, supported by President Obama. Shaheen, along with every other Democratic senator, voted for the Gang of 8 bill.

"Want to know why there's lawlessness on our border? Ask Senator Shaheen," said Brown in a 15-second TV ad that shows Shaheen and Obama standing together. "She voted against border security twice and for amnesty."

Brown's ads tying Shaheen to Obama's immigration policy may have been good politics. A recent national poll found Americans give Obama lower marks on immigration than his job generally, and 39 percent say they consider immigration one of their top three issues.

Keep hammering away on illegal immigration all the way back to D.C.

****Sigh*****
It is so frustrating. How hard is it to win the “messaging” battle????

“I am FOR a SECURE and PROTECTED Border. I am for the RULE OF LAW and a SENSIBLE IMMIGRATION POLICY. I would welcome any immigrant who wants to add to the greatness of this nation and who will follow our Sensible Immigration Policy and not break our laws. We can’t WEAKEN SOCIAL SECURITY and MEDICAIRE by the constant diversion of OUR TAX DOLLARS to give generous benefits to those who haven’t paid a dime of taxes.

I am against UNPROTECTED Borders where VIOLENT CRIMINALS and DRUG CARTELS have easy access in to our NEIGHBORHOODS.”

Messaging!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ANY candidate that can stick to this message and articulate it WINS.

If I can figure it out why can’t the clowns in washington???

Brown is better than Shaheen. That is the best I can say about him.

He was a hack in the State House. He was a disappointment in the Senate. I cannot believe he is the best that NH republicans can come up with.

He would caucus with the R’s. But he wouldn’t vote with them very often.

Well if Brown wins and he certainly can legitimately claim the mantle of RINO extraordinaire he at least votes with the Republicans sometimes. Shaheen never will.

I donated to Brown a couple of times when he ran against Coakley to take Teddy the Swimmer’s seat. It was one of the first elections after Zero took office, so it was a way to strike back against the idiots who put that commie fraud in the White House.

You are right, Brown was a disappointment. He was glad to chastise tea party/conservatives types, though they were instrumental in propelling him to victory.

I don’t have any allusions about this guy, and I have not sent him any money since his first Senate run and don’t intend to do so again, but the only worse thing than him being elected would be Shaheen being reelected.

I normally don’t play the lesser-of-two-evils game. However, immigration is such a huge problem for this country that if a Republican mush is at least willing to admit that amnesty is wrong, I can hold my nose.

The only explanation I can come up with is they’re all being blackmailed. They’ve got the goods on all the conservatives in Congress and the Supreme Court.

I agree. Voting for him in that special election was the first time I was excited to cast a ballot in Mass since 1984. I was so excited to send him to DC just to vote against Obamacare.

So I guess he did what I elected him to do. But from that point forward he acted like a typical wispy-washy MA republican.

He is not a bad guy. I just think we need someone with a little more dedication to the cause.

If a carpetbagging RINO can do this well by taking the right position on immigration, just think what someone genuine could do.

Obama illegally took money to fund his Bergdahl/5 Muzzie swap without notifying Congress in advance

Obama has taken money to illegally smuggle in hispanics into the USA and illegally transport them to US military bases and then on to numerous states without even notifying Governors first - millions - billions have been spent on illegal aliens being smuggled in by Beery Husseina Ebola (junior) & Co.

- serious enough to warrant the House filing . . . ????????

No kidding.

It’s a huge winning issue and all that the Republican squishes want to talk about is their aversion to “shutting the government down” and other drivel.

I hope Brown gets elected in NH. The people of NH and the Massholes who’ve moved there deserve the POS.

I agree that Brown is not anything to brag about.

However, if he will vote against another Rubio/Schumer Gang of 8 amnesty bill, that would be a net swing of two votes because Shaheen would vote for it.

It will also be one more cannon volley at the Republican establishment leaders who hold their hands over their ears when you tell them the majority of Americans are tired of flooding the country with third world immigrants.

I could have written your post as I had the same experience. I donated to Brown to stop Obamacare. I think he was elected to fill the seat of The Swimmer for that very reason. Unfortunately, it did not come up for a re-vote when Congress passed the existing bill. I agree he is better than the 'rat candidate, but I would never send a contribution to that RINO again.
