I have a quick simple test that separates true humor from mean spiritedness. I ask myself is the joke something that they would say straight to the face of the one that they are supposedly joking about?

Saying “Pants Up, Don’t Loot” to the intended target’s face isn’t so much humor vs mean spiritedness as humor vs death wish.
