American teenagers don't get enough sleep, often because their "biological sleep rhythms" clash with the wake-up times required by their schools' early starts -- and that's a problem says the American Academy of Pediatrics. The physicians group this week recommended that middle and high schools start no earlier than 8:30 a.m.

I had forgotten my one experience with castor oil. Day after I had had an opportunity to have my own personal taste test administered by my mom, my older sister suggested that next time it would be better to do as I was told. She was right and yes it is absolutely nothing but pure nasty.
Does it sometimes take you a while to go to sleep, and when you’re laying down, you’re constantly woken up with a start, your heart gives a good kick in your chest, and you think to yourself “what the hell just happened?”
Sometimes. But it’s usually connected to a REM nightmare.
Time to hit the sack. 1:30 am here. But I’m liable to lie there until 3 0r 4 am. Seen too many Sunrises lately!
My doc gave me Ambien once. It started me sleep-walking again, which I hadn’t done for many years. At least I don’t think I did! I was sleep eating, etc.. The whole Ambien deal. Almost burnt my house down one night sleep cooking!
I always thought it started way too late since I had to be at the breakfast table at 5:00 since my father was a contractor and went to work at 5:30 and everyone in the family had to be at the table at meals, no exceptions.

What a crock. They would certainly stay up later. Plus, it’s not sleep times that are responsible for poor school performance. It’s social media, lack of parental control, and uninteresting politically correct classes.
The problem is that the morning people get up early and make the rules to suit themselves. You’re right about the Bell curve, though.

Can’t they go to bed much earlier. Say... by getting off of their iPhones and computers. Where’s mom and dad. With rules. I had to be in bed early on school nights from mom and dad both saying so.
My generation got to school at 8:30 and began classes at 9am. We were hardly morons who stayed in bed all day. I think I got up around 6:30 to begin getting ready for school. It’s peculiar to me that some kids begin classes at 7:30am. They’ve barely had time to digest their breakfast - if their parents are even home to make it.
The 4 Yorkshiremen skit is practiced daily at FR! I knew the first time I saw that skit I was watching history in the making - hilarious and as true to life as possible. Of course, I doubt most freepers even understand the reference. (It means pointless, frenzied activity to show just how productive you are.)
They also didn’t have indoor plumbing or electricity or any of other the numerous advancements we have today.

Me too, but I’ve been a night owl as long as I can remember. When mom would make me wake up at 6 am for high school I would go into the bathroom and slump against the wall by the heat vent. It was rough. I wish they’d have thought of the start time change back then.

I agree! With a later start time they can get more chores done on the farm before they head off to school.......
No, it’s not coddling. It’s just plain stupid some of the times kids have to get up, and how early classes start now. Our school bus picked us up at about five til eight, and classes started around 8:30. That seemed right. More in line with the real world (many business starting times) and certainly easier on families.
