Ferguson is done as a police department. I see St. Louis County as picking up that contract for service.
Maybe that’s a good idea; here in NJ each of our towns is a little kingdom crushed by the costs of separate administrations for everything, and any sharing or consolidation of services is fiercely resisted by each kingdom (including fire departments originally designed for the massive manufacturing complexes that have long since left).
The state government put pressure on municipalities of less than five or ten thousand people to merge/consolidate, but they really have to go further; paying so many police chiefs and school superintendents is killing us. Our public sector is a huge parasite here...
