Doxycycline is not listed on the FDA list of medications in short supply, while a tetracycline shortage is described by the agency as “resolved.” Both drugs, however, are listed among shortages reported by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, which monitors drug inventories.
Two doxycycline manufacturers are no longer making the drug, the society’s website states, with Actavis, one current manufacturer, maintaining, “The reason for the shortage is supply and demand.” Actavis did not respond to several requests for comment.
