Arm Ukraine or Surrender
The New York Times ^ | August 31, 2014 | BEN JUDAH

Posted on 09/01/2014 8:04:33 AM PDT by Hojczyk

Russia would have triumphed over the world order imposed by the West after the Soviet Union lost the Cold War. This would mean the destruction of American geopolitical deterrence. America’s enemies, from China to Iran, would see this as an invitation to establish their own spheres of influence amid the wreckage.

Russia would not stop there. Mr. Putin wants to undermine NATO, and the smell of weakness would tempt him further. It would be merely a matter of time before Moscow exploited the Russians in the Baltic States to manufacture new “frozen conflicts.” Poland would feel compelled to act as though NATO did not exist, creating a defensive military alliance of its own with the Baltics; it might even establish a buffer zone in western Ukraine.

There is no easy way out now. But we must not let thousands of Ukrainians die because we dithered. We must be honest with them if we are not willing to fight a new Cold War with Russia over Ukrainians’ independence. But if we force Ukraine to surrender, rather than sacrifice lives in a fight for which we have no stomach, then we must accept that it is a surrender, too, for NATO, for Europe and liberal democracy, and for American global leadership. That is the choice before us.

Wow, You compare America to Russia?

America doesn’t want evil empires here, so you support the evil empire’s invasions currently taking place and use the old leftist equivalency claim?

Way to go, this is like the 1980s and 1960s all over again.

The smell of weakness is here too coming from the hand full of posters who swing from trees crying we surrender....we are weaklings....give it all to Putin!

I encourage everyone to follow danamco’s link. It will open your eyes about the divinity of Putin.

LOL

We have quite a mix of tinfoil nutters, surrender monkeys, Russkie agents, useful idiots, and liars congregating at FR these days.

When Republicans take back congress in a few months, we will arm Ukraine with bipartisan support. Russia may occupy Eastern Ukraine but we will make sure it is a Pyrrhic victory. It will cost Russia more than they can afford. We are going to do to Russia what Reagan did to the Soviet Union.

It won't matter if we arm Ukraine next year, because it will be half its current size and Russia will have its land bridge to Crimea. And we'll have bigger fish to fry by then.

I said that Ukraine was NOT seeking to become a member of NATO. The people didn't want to be part of NATO. Not one Ukrainian president wanted to become part of NATO. This has been well documented over the last several years. Yet you ignore that and you keep saying that Ukraine was a threat because they wanted to become a part of NATO. Your claim is false. And there is no justification for Russia's invasion. None!

Ukraine might have fooled you by pretending it didn't want to join NATO, but not Russia. NATO certainly wanted Ukraine to join. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what you and I believe about Russia's justification for its actions against Ukraine, Russia is acting in its perceived interest and we're in no position to stop them. It's really that simple.

ansel12, Al Sharpton would be proud of you for the way you label those who disagree with you. Because I don’t believe that Ukraine is any of America’s business and that we can’t stop what is happening anyway, you accuse me of supporting Russia or Putin. That tactic doesn’t work with me. I support America and don’t want my country to pick a fight that isn’t ours and that can only hurt us.

You are one of FR’s most dedicated Putin supporters, you have a strange habit of posting your views and at the same time saying that you aren’t posting them.

You take your pro-Russian invasion position seriously, and are passionately devoted to it, on thread, after thread, after thread.

ansel12, if your pro-war position had merit, I'm sure that you would base your arguments upon it. But all you do is try to silence your opposition by calling names. I bid you a good night.

Something to clear up ALL the smokescreen:

Even an Arab, like Oboza himself, is able to decipherer through what we are stuck with here in the U.S. And THEY helped greatly to put Putt King illegally in office together with other puppet masters like Rothschild/ Soros:

Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor is a prominent and highly respected citizen of the United Arab Emirates. A self-made man, he is Chairman of the Al Habtoor Group - one of the most successful conglomerates in the Gulf. Al Habtoor is known not only for his many business achievements but also his extensive knowledge of international political affairs; his philanthropic activity; his efforts to promote peace; and the fact that he has long acted as an unofficial ambassador for his country abroad. Writing extensively on both local and international politics, he publishes regular articles in the media and has released a number of books. Al Habtoor began his career as an employee of a local UAE construction firm and in 1970 established his own company, Al Habtoor Engineering. The UAE Federation, which united the seven emirates under the one flag for the first time, was founded in 1971 and this inspired him to undertake a series of innovative construction projects – all of which proved highly successful.

Well, Ans., let’s see you were so eager to defending NATO’s operations. Here’s an interesting NYT piece on NATO in Wales, and note the very last paragraph: “Nato’s combat mission in Afghanistan.” Wow, isn’t Afghanistan pretty far away from all NATO member countries, hmmm???

Then you had their bombing the HELL out of Yugoslavia and the illegal U.S. war against Libya, which another hmmm!!!

You know, in the late 1970s, not only Reagan, but even Jimmy Carter knew that you DO NOT GO TO WAR with a military that has been GUTTED. And so both of them proceeded to embark on the biggest peacetime military build-up in history.

Yet, now we have people that are either TOTALLY OBLIVIOUS to the condition of our military, or maybe just want this country to get a bloody nose SCREAMING for war.

It makes me SERIOUSLY WONDER whose side some of these people are on. It just doesn’t add up.

I’m NOT pro-Russia, but it troubles me that NATO is being used to escalate the problems in Ukraine who is NOT a NATO member. Lately NATO has been used as an excuse for Oboza’s involvement in the illegal war mongering in Libya. And in another place read NATO in Afghanistan as a combatting force/mission!!!
