Young European Converts Are Swelling the Ranks of Islamic State
Haaretz ^ | Sep. 2, 2014 | Anna Momigliano

Flocking of foreigners to Syria and Iraq is unprecedented, expert tells Haaretz.

The long arm of the brutal Islamic State organization is reaching into the European continent and further afield, drawing growing numbers of young disaffected citizens to its more-radical-than-al-Qaida ranks. Many of these foreigners, say European researchers, are young converts to Islam who are likely to fall prey to particularly extremist interpretations of the religion.

At present, some European governments are tightening security measures to prevent possible terror attacks by the foreign-trained, French- and English-speaking jihadis, while local human rights groups warn against the possibly illegal arrest of minors.

The presence of Western-educated fighters in what was formerly called the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, gained particular attention after release of a video showing the recent beheading of U.S. journalist James Foley by a masked executioner with a London accent. But European nations have been worrying for quite a while about their citizens joining the radical group which declared the birth of an Islamic State in June.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, for one, has recently authorized police and security forces to confiscate passports of suspected terrorists at the borders and to impose restrictions on where they live. French police have arrested a number of young men and women, some as young as 15, who were suspected of planning to join the Islamic State. Meanwhile, human rights groups in France have protested the arrests of minors, arguing that this violates the UN International Convention of the Rights of the Child.

“The presence of European fighters in Syria, and lately also in Iraq, has been unprecedented in both its scope and speed," Jeanine de Roy van Zuijdewijn, a researcher at the Hague's International Centre for Counter-Terrorism, tells Haaretz.

When you believe in nothing, you’ll fall for anything.

In a way, this is good. Flush them out of Europe. Get them out where they can be droned, bombed, shot, whatever.

I can see the attraction, it’s very much like being a liberal.

You don’t need education, you can be comfortable in your ignorance, and simply believe what the mullahs tell you.

You don’t need intelligence, as the Qu’ran tells you that you are intellectually superior to everyone else.

You don’t need morality, either. You are free to lie, cheat, steal, rape, pillage, murder, beat your wife, have sex with barnyard animals and little boys and girls, as long as it’s all done in the name of Allah to promote Islam.

Have a violent streak? Like to see blood and guts up close? Need to subjugate (defenseless) others and feel superior? You’re in the right place, Islam is for you!

A life free of any restraints can be yours!

It is better that these faux Europeans go to the ME where they can be neutralized than to stay in Europe to eventually ply their mayhem there. That is, of course, assuming that there is some intelligence operating in Europe in both senses and those leaving will not be allowed to return or will be sequestered upon return.

That’s total BS.

There are plenty of atheists who don’t join ISIS.

One has to believe in Islam to become a bearded barbarian — that’s how basic it is.

They have all been given over to a reprobate mindset.

How you took my comments as an indictment of atheism is beyond me.

They crave a regimented, often charismatically-explained worldview.

They can be converted into savages after the zealousness deepens.

When people have a spiritual void because Christianity in the public square has been all but banned or has become just another tool of the culture they will be attracted to alternatives.

From what I've read men are being made to sit down to pee in places like Sweden and Taiwan, how many John Waynes are there anymore, strong father figures in the home? Men are being turned feminine, maybe some guys see this as a way to strength and family?

No indictment, but atheists are often thought of as believing in very little, and your premise was that those who joined ISIS believed in nothing.

I am saying that those who join that terrorist group believe in Islam and are ALL muzzies.

Nothing surprising here. For aimless anomic youth in a rudderless, vitiated culture, anything which evokes passion will have tremendous appeal. The circumstance bears strong formal resemblance to Germany in the early thirties.

Not only Europe, but the entire West, and that includes the US.

(Just a little side bet — Europe can get rid of Islam much more easily than the US EVER can. They can get rid of muzzies overnight if they want to hard enough. We can’t, because we want to coddle them under the 1st Amendment)
