American journalist Steven Sotloff, who was brutally beheaded by the Islamic State terrorist group, took great risks to keep his Jewish faith in captivity, a former fellow-captive of the murdered journalist told Yediot Aharonoth.
However, it turns out that Sotloff was in fact Israeli.
A media gag order on the issue was released on Wednesday, allowing publication of the fact that Sotloff made aliyah (immigration) to Israel in 2005 by himself, and studied at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya.
Sotloff reportedly made sure to fast in secret during Yom Kippur and even prayed in the direction of Jerusalem, as is customary in Jewish prayers, despite the risk he faced if his Islamist captors ever found out he was Jewish. …

The unfortunate part is the Sotloff is still dead and odumbo has blood on his hands. Knowing that Sotloff turned out to be Jewish gives odumbo an “out” so he can continue to do NOTHING to prevent even more murders at the hands of ISIS. There will be more blood on odumbo’s hands before the dust settles.

The last name is probably Russian, but many American Jews come from Russian or Polish Jewish émigré communities, and thus have versions of Russian or other Eastern European names that Americans have now come to think of as Jewish (even though many are not). But to a Middle Easterner, it would simply be another Slavic last name.

I’m sorry he’s dead and RIP. No one deserves to be slaughtered like that. But what possesses someone, a Jew and an Israeli no less, to venture into these areas where these animals run loose, with no forethought to what they’re going to face if ‘captured’. Shouting ‘journalist’ to these animals isn’t going to help you very much.

My family is Slavic, and I knew immediately that his last name was probably Russian Jewish. Depends on how the name translates.

The most common ultra-Orthodox Jewish names in NYC now seem to be Green, Williams and Smith, btw. A NYer would likely know that these people came from a particular group in the Jewish community, but most other Americans wouldn’t.
