Tesla reportedly selects Nevada to build massive $5 billion battery plant

RENO, Nev. – Tesla Motors has chosen Nevada as the site for a massive, $5 billion factory that will pump out batteries for a new generation of electric cars, a person familiar with the company's plans said Wednesday.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made, said work would soon resume at an industrial park outside Reno.

Four other states -- California, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico -- were vying for the project and the estimated 6,500 jobs it will bring.

Does a Tesla have enough juice to drive from Palo Alto to Reno on one charge?

My guess is a stop in Sacramento for a tax break will help keep the juice flowing....

Tesla's primary product is PR and they'll sue if you give them a bad review.

Tesla Libel Suit Over BBC’s ‘Top Gear’ Dismissed in U.K.

The crazy thing is that Clarkson has always said he loves the car. He pointed to beautiful styling, great handling, plenty of power (on a full charge) but it had the drawback of being battery powered and ran it out of juice on the track by driving it like a sports car.

A year or so later James May came to the USA and rented one (because Tesla wouldn't let them test one again). He liked it, pointed out the new features but also pointed out how quickly the battery was dying in the Florida heat. Brian Johnson of AC/DC drove it on the show as well. He said it was a nice car but no thanks.

Jay Leno owns one and he calls it a rich man's toy.

Have you seen the Tesla vs Aston Martin Rapide drag race? Most people simply cannot fathom the concept that an electric car is beating a 12 cylinder conventional car -- electric cars in the past have been so disappointing -- but the technology in the Tesla is very interesting.

Actually, I've decided to lay of the Tesla lists due to the massive misinformation. That's cool that others think the Tesla is worse than a Yugo or that Elon Musk is pulling a fast one -- means I've got less competition for my spot in the charging station.

I just checked the mileage and it looks like right at 250 miles.

If everything was just right they might make it but I believe it’d be close.

In winter I wouldn’t even think about it and going over the Sierras would be problematic even in good weather.

Harry Reid is smiling! I didn’t expect Texas because Musk is a Baraqqi partisan.

SpaceX is building a launch facility there. They already have a test facility near Waco.

And California is way too expensive.

They assemble the cars in Fremont.

"This car is a passing fad toy for the rich"

I guess you are talking about the model S?

"For the demand they have now it seems the batteries could be built by a contractor"

They are not building this battery plant for the Model S. It is for the Model X and Model 3. The model X is a crossover vehicle and Model 3 is a low cost electric "for the masses". They are talking 500,000 cars per year.

As for a contractor, Panasonic is taking an equity position in this plant and it is entirely possible they will be manufacturing batteries for other electric car manufacturers.

He is selling cars but he is really selling batteries because that is the most expensive component in the car.

Remember when GE made appliances as a way to sell electric motors and controls. Eventually, electric motors became cheap and GE got out of that business, but they still make electric motors for train engines and turbines for windmills.

My 2001 SVT Cobra will go 350 miles on the interstate. 75 miles on the road race track used a full tank in 40 minutes. The track eats gas, tires, brakes and longevity. But it is fun.

That 4 month waiting list only represents a few thousand vehicles, not tens or hundreds of thousands.

"The 6500 union members employed would be a nice bonus for Dems also helping lock in control of the state.",p> Nevada is a right-to-work state. Right-to-work laws prohibit agreements between labor unions and employers making membership in a union, or payment of union dues, a condition of employment. This is probably another part of the choice over California.

That industrial park has a rail spur, as well. Don’t know if their production volume will warrant that or not.

Probably not. As soon as you leave Sacto its up hill almost all the way. If it's cold you need heater, if it's hot you need A/C. If it rains you need wipers and if you don't travel in daytime you need lights. Chances are you like the radio and will want to use the navigation system. All of these things eat the charge.

Charging stations will be built in random locations, (another reason for the GPS) so you'd want to stop often so as not to be stranded in the mountains.

My guess is that he’s thinking beyond cars, because the demand for electric cars are just not high enough. There are probably more demand for things like rechargeable storage for solar power units.

Northern NV is a good choice.

and then three's THIS regarding the lagging sales of E-cars which will result in less charging stations being built.

Side note: I have neighbors who bought a Nissan Leaf. They were excited that their travels within 100 miles would all be free. Their monthly energy bill is noticeably and it's summer with longer days and less consumption. They were also a bit dismayed to learn that all those stores putting in charging stations to lure customers CHARGE FOR THE SERVICE! (surprise, surprise)

I don’t think it’s much of a surprise they would choose Nevada.

I wonder how many “battery changing” stations Elon isn’t going to build in Nevada at the same time he doesn’t build the 5 billion dollar battery factory?

This factory is nothing but a scam, just like Elon’s highly publicized “battery swapping” stations that never got built.

I’d be surprised if any battery factory at all gets built, much less on with this supposed capacity.

BTW, global annual sales of Teslas in 2013 was 25,000, a far cry from the million cars you projected.

Yeah, the numbers say the factory is a scam for sure.

No, you just hyped it again. Battery change in 90 seconds? Sure. Last time you said the record range was 500 miles, now you say 400. And nobody else cares about your relatives Teslas or Aston Martins.

Hah that’s easy, Musk isn’t going to build any battery changing stations and if the battery factory does get built it won’t be with near all his money.
