I lived in St Louis from 88 to 92.
I road a commuter bus partly because of this.
There are so many townships, half the time you don’t know what town you’re in.
And if you get stopped, the cop writes you a ticket, the confiscates your license to ensure you pay your fine. You drive around without a license until your court date, or until you go to that town and pay the fine.
This happened to a few friends I worked with.
Our offices were located out near the airport, most everybody took the long way around via the inter-state to avoid all the locals.
I agree that the system is not right and needs to be fixed.
Appropriate? I hardly think killing 5 people is appropriate.
Did you like the part where the cop could turn a yellow light into a red light with the switch of a button....and then issue tickets for running a red light?
Such an abuse of power, and then cops wonder why the public doesn’t trust them.
I knew Thornton, was a classmate of his brother. Good guy, a little goofy, but he simply would not come to terms with the powers that were at the time. Too bad he picked up that gun...it really is: the yuppies on the city council are, unfortunately, almost infinitely replaceable, as events subsequently have proven yet again.
Cookie Thornton, FWIW, was a black man.
I’m white. If I don’t pay my traffic tickets or appear in court to contest them, no judge is going to buy my “I’m po” defense.
Does Shandalier think it should be different for her?
Black privilege!
It obviously didn't prevent the gang from resuming its activities, so I assume killing 5 was insufficient.
But maybe I'm just old fashioned.
The article mentioned the business was started when the twon was majority white. My mistake, although it doesn’t make any difference.
So she did have the money.
The simple fact of the matter is that the administration of the "law" in these areas is not only unjust but illegal, not only because of the denial of due process and equality under law, but the fact (which seems clear from the horrendous citation rates) that many (and possibly most) of the citations are fraudulent.
These municipalities essentially function as armed gangs extorting money from the populace.
And race has little do do with it-- I've seen exactly the same BS in poor, rural communities that are 99% white.
While in jail, she missed a job interview. She fell behind in her paralegal studies. When she finally got her day in court, she was told to change out of her jail jumpsuit into the same clothes she had worn for three days straight, and that had been sitting in a bag for the previous two weeks. She was brought into the courtroom to face the judge, handcuffed, in dirty clothes that had been marinated in her own filth. I was funky, I was sad, and I was mad, she says. I smelled bad. I was handcuffed. I missed my kids. I didnt feel like a person anymore.
Voss was able to get Boldens bond reduced to $700, but that was still too much for Bolden or her family to pay. The judge also told Voss that he wouldnt consider an indigency motion until the next session, which meant another two weeks in jail. Bolden was taken back to her cell. The next day, her mother borrowed against a life insurance policy to post her daughters bond. It doesnt just affect you, Bolden says. It affects your family. Your kids. Your friends. My mother is disabled. And she had to help me out. My sister had to put her life on hold to watch my kids.

Sometimes when little Hitlers push too hard - little people push back.
“But the woman used as an example in this article is another one of these people who makes a whole bunch of bad choices and then wants society to bail her out. It isnt just poverty, its bad choices. Like getting tattoos instead of paying traffic fines. Im sure if you went to her house youd find more evidence of money spent on luxuries instead of necessities.”
And don’t they ALWAYS have a passel of children as well! That alone is probably the reason for their “poverty.” There is little question in my mind as to the corruption that exists in traffic law enforcement everywhere today, but as you point out, this isn’t a real example of the problem.
Then fight the ticket. If it’s for speeding, what proof does the cop have? The same for no seat belt. For driving without a license, that’s hard to beat if you’re guilty. And if you’re guilty of the others, then maybe you should be obeying the law instead of worrying about how you’re going to dodge it if you get caught.
I have no doubt there are money traps around the country that rob innocent citizens. And if that can be proven, those responsible deserve the harshest punishment.
I’m doubting Shaneekqua here is a poor victim of anything but her own choices.
Driving is a big responsibility, and the person in this article broke numerous driving laws. Also, having four babies out of wedlock is just plain stupid.
Hmmm. Glad the police showed up and called ahead for you. In your case, yes, stuff happens.
Frankly, I was thinking of the habit of a whole set of people who seem to think that deadlines and times to show up are malleable.
