Chicago hospital trains Navy doctors for battle
Associated Press ^ | September 4, 2014 | DON BABWIN

CHICAGO (AP) — The patient had been shot on the streets of Chicago, but when Dr. Jared Bernard stood over his open body in the operating room, he could see that the single bullet had unleashed the same kind of massive infection inflicted by roadside bombs in Afghanistan.

Although the wounded man lay in a modern American hospital, saving his life would be no different than caring for a soldier wounded by a bomb exploding under a Humvee. That's why the Navy is sending its doctors, nurses and medics to Stroger Hospital, a Cook County facility that, in its own way, stands in the middle of a war zone.

What a sad commentary on America when we are able use our cities to train military doctors for combat.

Barrack and Rahm will make this priority #1 to end the carnage. After all, they care about young, black men.

Can’t send them to Detroit anymore because people are shooting back and the crime rate is declining. That plus sending people to Detroit violates the Geneva convention.

I have always wondered why we don’t use our military medical personnel at VA hospitals here in the U.S. when they return from foreign deployments. Seems like it would be the natural thing to do.

This program for training DOD doctors has been going on a long time. Send your docs to where there are lots of bullets flying for training.

The best part of this article might be how the patient was suffering “massive infection” after being rolled in to the ER minutes before and tens of minutes after being shot.

That must be some bad air in Chicago! Full of lead or something...

Kit!

Read the injury reports on weekend joy activities in Chicago and you’ll see that Stroger gets plenty of yutes who have met with the wrong end of an SUV - it couldn’t be a gun because those are illegal to own. Must have been a misprint. It sure looked like gun, but I was sure they meant SUV.

Why is that?

When we return from deplyments we fall back in on our respective military hospitals and take care of active military and their families. That is our peace time mission.

Well, they won’t be getting them from Hospital Corps School at Naval Station, Great Lakes, IL. The school was closed on 28 July 2011 and moved to Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX.

San Antonio’s gang battles have been providing Brooke Army Med Ctr docs with training for decades. When I worked in the healthcare field in San Antonio, it was well known that the military would airlift gun shot wounds of any stripe (read non-military) to their facilities for treatment.

My brother, a Navy Corpsman attached to the 1st Marine Division in VN, later spent seven years on the Detroit Fire Department EMS. He quit after seeing more people shot in Detroit than he had in his two tours of VN.

Detroit General used to look like an Army MASH unit on the weekends.
