Yes, you can go to Cuba legally. Yes, you can have your passport stamped. And yes, it’s safe there. These were just a few of the questions I was bombarded with before and after I went to Cuba in July.

Going to Cuba for Americans is probably the easiest it has been in years. Under the Clinton and Obama administrations, travel restrictions have been eased.

My brother in law works for the State Dept. He was just in Cuba a couple of years ago and took a bunch of video which he showed me at Christmas. Its really amazing to see all the old timey cars etc. He pretty much told me the same story as your son. They have a few resort hotels for tourists and business people and the rest of the public is SOL.

“Unfortunately, many of the buildings have not been maintained, primarily due to the U.S. embargo”

So what they're saying is government interference in open trade has an adverse impact on the economy. Who would have ever thought such a thing?

You’re exactly right, dfw. The embargo, not blockade, could go away in a snap if the Castros wished it so. I was stationed in Havana with the U.S. diplomatic mission. If it weren’t for the Caribbean outlook on life, I think they’d have committed national suicide a long time ago. I left in 1997, and the cars of the 50s were being held together with baling wire, chewing gum and Bondo. When I was there, some Europeans opened a Fiat showroom in downtown Havana. I doubt if the entire population of my barrio could come up with the monthly payment. The cars were for sale strictly for foreigners. One, when my 92 Ford Bronco was in for repair, I had to ride to work in a Lada cab. It was like riding across the prairie in a Conestoga wagon. It was like traveling backward in time. Lines everywhere for food, cops all over, apartment buildings that could’ve been lifted right out of Stalingrad. Great weather, great beaches and the greatest rum on planet earth. Havana is great if you’ve got dollars and a diplomatic passport.

The embargo is a fabrication. Europe and SA trade with Cuba all day long. It is an excuse for the corruption of communism.

I’m not seeing it on YouTube. I see the trailer and the soundtrack but not the movie.
